Pregnancy post transplant?

This may be a dumb question but I honestly don't know, can you/is it safe to have a baby post transplant? I don't how the anti-rejection drugs would affect a pregnancy, etc.

I know there are ways that your transplant team can work with you because there was a woman that had a child post transplant at my center. That being said I also know that my doc talked to me because I am of "child bearing age" and made me aware that I needed to be careful as the mortality rate for a double lung transplant patient in the short term after labor is around 60%.

As for the meds and such I am not sure how they would be altered or how they would effect a fetus. That is something I would think you should ask either a transplant team or an ob/gyn.

I will be honest Danyell my thoughts on the mortality rate were actually that it may not be just the labor but a combination of labor and then the immediate after care of the child. Most mothers tend to neglect themselves when they are caring for a newborn, so I am curious if it is a recovery issue as well as the stress and fatigue caused by a newborn. I have no idea about the C Section but I would imagine that a CSection would bring its own risks - such as possible infection.

I am sure if you were to talk to a Tx Team they could give a lot more information though.

I don't know of anyone personally thats had a baby post tx, but from what I've heard from my team the physical pregnancy + post tx is its own set of complications. Totally different from someone without tx.
I think its a safe bet that all moms post birth will suffer health wise somewhat. Interestingly many moms do tend to take better care of themselves after having a child bc they have that much more to be healthy for.
I would go over all your options for the future with your team. That includes preg, adoption..things in the medical world change rapidly.
Best wishes!!
(fyi-many years back when my health was much much worse, and i wanted a child very badly my doctor said to me-'I have never had a patient that wanted a child, and one way or another, we were not able to help them be a parent. So if you are open to waiting till you are healthy enough, and open to being a parent-not being pregnant, but being a parent by any means (adoption, etc)...we can help you.'
My point is planning and time answer alot of questions.

I always thought that it was because pregnancy can change your system and all of the hormones and antibodies can alter your immune system and increase the chance of rejection.

I really wish there was more literature out there on this topic!
