Hi...I'm a 29 yr old female with CF. I have a 5 yr old daughter. Just wanted to say that there is no insurance (for any woman with or without CF to become pregnant). It is more difficult for a woman with CF to get pregnant but it is not impossible....it just depends on your health. Also before you make such a big decision you need to talk to your CF doc to ensure that you are in the best shape to carry a child. Having a child can take a big toll on a woman with CF during the pregnancy AND after. It takes alot of energy which means lots of calories! I wish you the best....but talk to your doc!Dea

hello my name is jennifer i have cf. i was diagnosed at 6 weeks old i'am almost 21 years old now. it seems like my worst time was when i was little. i spent my 1st everything in the hospital. the doctors were threating to take me away from my parents before they found out what was wrong with me, the doc thought my parents were starving me. because i couldnt gain weight. anyhow it took them 6 weeks to finally figure out what was wrong with me. the doctors told my parents that i would not live to see the age 1. my left lung collapsed when i was just a few months old and they expected me to die overnight.....the next morning i was awake playing in my crib. the doctors was so amazed. i stayed sick all the time and was always in the hospital. then in my childhood years i was the same i went to the hospital every 2-3 weeks and it stayed that way up until i was about 12 when i turned 12 my parents got divorced and that was really hard on me. so i got depressed and went in the hospital every 2 weeks. i did bad really up untill i turned 16 when i turned 16 i met this young man that i'am now married to. everything is like it has just turned around for me. i'am doing so good. i have a little cough but nothing i cant handle!! i have been out of the hospital for a year and a half. and thats a record for me (lol) me and my husband got married july of 2000 i have been thinking of having children but i'am afraid to. i know that might sound selfish but i'am scared of dieing. although i would love to have 1 child. just 1 lol but i'am doing so good i would hate to chance that. Am i wrong for feeling this way? i just had a little brother born 4-4-03 and he has cf and i hope he has a better life then i had with it when i was small. but hes doing so good i think he needs to be retested because he does not have any symtoms of cf. he is the total oppossite of me when i was born. anyhow i just thought i would share my story also. i'am here if anyone wants to talk. your friend, jennifer

Hi! I am Stephanie, a 27 year old woman with CF. I have been trying to get pregnant for over 6 yrs with no luck. I am now seeing a fertility specialist who seems hopeful about it. Just wondering if anybody else is in the same boat as me, or if there are some tricks of the trade that might help my chances. Thanks!

I know this sounds strange and you've heard it before, but from my experience it worked! Dont try so hard....I tried to get pregnant for about 2 yrs and then finally decided that it was not meant to be.....I got pregnant! But they do say that the stress of trying to get pregnant can make your hormones all funky...(for lack of better word). Anyway, to all of you women who have CF and are trying to get pregnant....be patient! Almost all women with CF are able to become pregnant...Good luck and best wishes to all of you!Dea

Thank you, Dea....very encouraging! Although I have been trying to get pregnant for almost 6 years, I rarely overstressed myself about it (or so I think!). I try to keep the attitude that if it is going to happen, its going to happen. If not, I'm (sort of) okay with it. Anyhow, thank you for your thoughts. I agree 100%.Stephanie

<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Stephanie, hello my name is Carrie, I am 30 years old and I have CF. I also have a 3 year old little girl. I know it gets frustrating and you want so bad to have a child, and I'm here to tell you it is possible even at 27 to have a child. I was 27 when I concieved and 27 when I gave birth and it was all natural. I will admit I had an easy pregnancy with no problems and even after she was born it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I slept when she did and all. After I had her my doctor's helped me get onto SSI dissability so that I wouldn't have to work because they were afraid that going back to work would put too much stress on my body. I have never had my daughter in daycare. SO it is possible to do all. My daughter does not have CF or any traces of anything. She is a very healthy little girl and my whole world.. I would not trade anything I love her very much, so it will be worth the wait when you are lucky enough for pregnancy to happen. Make sure your health is in tip top condition though. Good luckSincerelyCarrie

I am 24 with cf. i am trying to get pregnant also. i am lucky enough to already have a daughter she is 3. i was 20 when i suprisingly got pregnant with her. my cycle was 4 weeks late before i tested. i always thought people with cf couldnt have children. the only thing is i was young and with someone i didnt love. now i am happily married and my husband is more of a dad then i could of ever imagined to my little girl. now we are trying to have another and it hurts that im not getting pregnant but i feel i shouldnt expect it. After all i am alive what more sould i ask for having CF.my biggest problem with being a mother already and wanting another is the guilt of cf. it is so emotional. i start planning my daughters life and wonder how much will get to see? i hate the way i feel and try not to think about death but it always happens. am i alone?good luck to everyone! oh yeah my gyno says my cm doesnt lookt hat thick so could be that way for you too. i am not ovulating so i am on clomid. hope it works.:

Hello everyone....i am 23 f/w/cf. Luckily i am very healthy which is my top priority. But like many others, i want to have children one day too. I am getting married next april, and think a lot of having a child. It is both happy and scary. I have heard many different sides of the story. I just try to think, whats meant to be will find a way. I hope I am able to have a child some day. Although, like many others sometimes i worry about the future, my life, health etc. It's good to know that i am not alone. It is very encouraging to find a site and learn about other peoples experiences, and to hear of how great peoples lives can be even with cf. I find a lot of this very helpful to me. I think it's incredible too when i read about people who are a lot older than me who are doing so well.

I am a 32 year old just diagnosed with cf. Struggled w/infertility for almost 7 years. Ended up getting pregnant via intra uterine insemination along with injectable fertility drugs. I have a beautiful 21 month old daughter. We are currently trying again via the same method. With my daughter, we got pregnant 2 out of 3 tries (I miscarried once). They figure that with cf and secretions being increased and thick throughout the body that with this method, where they bypass the vagina the sperm have a better chance of making it. We had my husband tested and know that he is not a carrier, so we feel pretty good about trying again, knowing that our child won't have cf.

I really know what you are going through right now. I am 24 and we have been trying for a year and a half. It is so frustrating! (I just had a load of friends that got pregnant "accidentally....from a mistake" Oops...sucks for them, right? Meanwhile, I have my daily trips to the fertility doc 2 weeks a month. Anyway, I am angry, but scared about the future as well. I am extremely healthy, but what does the future hold...? Also, are we allowed to adopt? The discrimination thing sucks as well, and adoption is sooo expensive. Hope you all are doing well...Good luck!!!

To All women with CF...who are pregnant or trying to have a baby.Just wanted to give u a brief summary of my story. I am now 30 with CF...and have a 5 yr old daughter (NO CF.....of course shes a carrier) My husband and I had a hard time trying to conceive also....2 yrs. I had decided that I wasnt meant to have a child and about 6 mos later I was pregnant!!!! I had talked to my doctor before making this decision to make sure I was in good enough health to carry a child. She gave me the ok. My lung function was good....and was at a stable weight. So throughout my pregnancy...I remained healthy. My lung function stayed up....and I actually gained 17 lbs throughout my whole pregnancy. I did everything I was supposed to...and I was taking extra prenatal vitamins. I even worked through most of my pregnancy. I was also seeing a high risk pregnancy doc (pereanatologist)They did an ultrasound every month to make sure my baby was developing properly. At 36 weeks...my blood sugars started getting high. So they told me basically to cut down the extra sugars that I didnt need....being regular soda..which I didnt drink much of anyway, candy, etc. He discussed starting me on insulin, but decided to wait until my next appt. So my next appt at 37 weeks....was on Thursday March 5, 1998. My blood sugar was still too high. He checked me and I was already dilated to a 2....and could feel the babys head. I carried very low...which I think is why I didnt have any lung probs. Anyway.... I was 2 hrs away from my doc and the hospital...and he didnt want me going into labor so far away...so he decided to induce me. He told me to come back on Friday...March 6. So my little girl was born at 37 weeks...and both she and myself did fine. She weighed a little under 6 lbs...was so tiny...but healthy. We were in the hosp 24 hrs and went home. Here we are 5 years later. I did develop full blown diabetes about 6 mos after she was born, but I wouldnt change a thing to have my beautiful daughter. So to all of u....good luck. have patience....just wanted to share my story.Dea

Hi I'm 20 w/f. i'm not pregnant nor really trying to become but at one point i was untill i realized i was still young. I'd like to share some tips and advice that i learned around the way. First off for women with cf its only difficult because of the secretions, so I hear that for women trying to concieve its good to take robbotussum ( the cough syrup) 2 tsp every 4 hours. besides that i also hear that you should have sex everyother day. Drink vitamins and especially Folic Acid. Prenatals are good too. Get a good amount of exersize because some-1 in good shape is more liely to concieve. And also when you do have sex, there are certain positions that might increase fertility. I know this subject is a little funny but i'm just trying to help out with tips because after all this is what women trying to concieve love to hear. first off theres ofcoarse missionary ( man on top) theres also side to side, and doggy style. sounds funny but i've read all these are the best for concieving because it shoots the sperm futhur. And after all these they also recommend that you lie on your back with a pillow under your pelvis for 30 mins after so that no sperm leaks out and you have better chances. I hope i help out in any way <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> goodluck to all of you and please email and notify me about your pregnancy. keep me updated! =) druizcalderon@bellsouth.net

First I'd like to say congrats to everyone who wants to get pregnant and is sucsessful. I wish you all health and happiness. I also want to note for any younger girls reading this that CF IS NOT A FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL. It is generally very difficult to get pregnant with CF but if you are sexually active and don't want to become pregnant, you must use birth control. It is also important that you know if your antibiotics will interfear with your birth control. I have been using the depo-provera shot for over a year and am very pleased. I get it once every three months, and it rarely interacts with antibiotics b/c it doesn't go through my digestive system. I've been on inhaled, oral, IV antibiotics while using it. Debbie 22 yr old w/ CF

Just wanted to say I am also on the dep proveral shot and have been since the birth of my daughter almost 6 yrs ago...I love it. I dont have to worry about another form of protection while on antibiotics...which can be a big thing with cfers. I have done well on it and have had no side effects. I know some though have had probs with it too....You just have to talk to your doc about it...see what is best. I agree....if you are sexually active...and have CF....IT IS POSSIBLE to get pregnant.Dea
