I cant offer much info about the Vanco at 14 weeks pregnant, but I know that when I got sick while pregnant, the 3rd time I needed IV's (i was 30 weeks pregnant by this point) my doctor and my high risk ob/gyn were going to put me on Vancomycin but then we remembered I am actually allergic to it! I am not sure of it's effects at 14 weeks because they baby is developing very rapidly at that point.... run EVERYTHING by a high risk ob/gyn. I remember my CF doctor would always want to put me on meds during my pregnancy and in the beginning (up until the end of the 2nd trimester really) my ob/gyn would say "NO! That can/will hurt the baby!" (cipro was a big no-no) .. but the further along you are, the better. But there is a fine line because you have to have a healthy mom to have a healthy baby..

I just looked Vancomycin up and it is a category B drug while pregnant .. it says "FDA pregnancy category B. This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Vancomycin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."

Hi Jenn and Tina,
I am being followed by a high risk OB, so it did ease my mind some that she talked to my CF doctor. Sometimes I feel like although my CF doctor advocates for me, he doesn't always advocate for my baby. I actually was on Cipro during my first four weeks of pregnancy, but that was before I knew I was pregnant.

I live in Kenai, Alaska, although the hospital where my CF doctor is is in Anchorage. I am also a teacher, besides being a mom. Where are you guys from? Tina, did you/are you breastfeeding? How did your IV treatments affect that? Or have you had any since Brianna was born?

Hi Jeana,

Wow, Alaska! That's cool! I'm in Wisconsin (Milwaukee). I'm a nurse practitioner in the pediatric ICU.

I've found that CF drs do focus on the mom more than the child. My CF dr said she is more concerned for the mom but will be in discussions with the high risk OB drs to best treat both the mom and baby. It's a fine line -- I'd hate to have my health deterioate by the "worry" of side effects of treatments ... of course, if it was absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy, I would not want that therapy...

Are you feeling better? Hopefully you can go home soon to your family! Is your hospital open to your child coming to stay with you for sometime? I worry about that when I have my baby. If I get sick, will I be able to have my baby stay with me esp if I am breastfeeding.

Hi Jenn,

Wow, you're a nurse. Do you find that you have to be really careful coming in contact with sick kids? I teach middle school, but it's the bacterias that my son brings home from daycare that I worry about more. Middle schoolers keep their distance better.

I'm not sure if my hospital is open to the baby staying with me or not. The hardest thing this time was the fact that my husband was working out of town and I had to find someone to watch Chris, my 3-yr-old, while I'm in the hospital. Also, the hospital is 3 hours away from where I live.
