Probiotics question

If I remember correctly, probiotics are the good bacteria that occur naturally in your gut. When you take antibiotics, it can kill this good bacteria along with the bad ones you want to kill, the balance of good and bad bacteria gets out of wack, and therefore mess up your digestive system (get the runs with your antibioitics? There ya go ). They are the "good stuff" that is in yogurt (which is why people suggest you eat yogurt if your tummy is torn up).

When I was in the hospital (and ironicly, not my cf center hospital) for a liver infection, they put me on them at least twice a day while I was on the major iv antibiotics. That was what first got me interested in them. I'll see if I have an article saved on them in my "favorites".

Here's one someone had posted earlier somewhere around here (apologies to who that was- I can't remember):

Sonia,

I am not sure I have answers to your questions and I am not an expert on this, but if you search on the net you can find some studies on probiotics. I am not sure if you will find anything that pertains directly to cf, but you will see some that tend to show things that help with side effects of cf. ie. We tend to use antibiotics often and many of us are on them all the time, ie azithromycin. It is known that antibiotics kill the good bacteria that exists in our gut. This bacteria is needed for a proper immune system, help in digestion, keep fungus at bay, etc. Probiotics claim to restore this, like yogurt, etc, but in higher amounts. Are all brands of probiotics successful at restoring this, probably not. Which ones are, I have no idea. I decided to try the Primal life ultra (5 billion CFU) based on reading about it. I told my doctor at my last appt that I was going to try it and he had no problem with it, and even thought it was a good idea. Note I am still trying to convince my doctor about the eflow, so he is pretty conservative about things.

Now I'll tell you a scary story in case you aren't already convinced. This will likely make you want to have them at the very least while on IVs. I do a fundraiser at Christmas time at Borders book store wrapping gifts for cf donations. A volunteer showed up to help me with a picture of her beautiful daughter who died in '99 at age 17. She was 80% FEV1. She went in for a "tune up" and caught C-diff and was dead 2 weeks later. This mother preached probiotics to me like crazy. She said if the doctors had only be smart enough to put her daughter on a probiotic while she was on these hard hitting IV anti's her body wouldn't have gotten C-diff in the first place or would have been able to combat it if she had gotten it. She was left with no good bacteria in her system.</end quote>

YIKES!!! After reading this I took the bottle of Lactobacillus acidophilus that I have in the frig and took a pill. And will make sure I continue to do so. Thanks Lauren for sharing. Stories like this certainly make an impact on the importance of being proactive with one's health.

Excellent info, thanks! This is what I thought they were, as I'd been put on acidophulus (?spelling) when I was a kiddo in the hospital on IVs, but no one has ever done so since. I got the impression from the other posts that perhaps there was some magical thing it does for CFers to be on it continually. I do agree it sounds like one of those things that seems good to be on for anyone, CF or not. I will look into it or just eat more activia every day!
