Problems with little or no appetite

thanks Jane. I'm sorry he has this trouble too.
I have noticed that fatty foods and packaged foods are worse - it must be all the chemicals...that's the only thing I can think of.

As a kid (up until about the age of 30), I was a pig and had no trouble. In fact, I had no trouble to the point that food controlled me, and I began to HATE that. So much so. mthat I even started bulemia, and then lost a ton of weight (went from 135 to 90). Anyway, I came back strong and had no trouble after that. Until recently (the other was over 20 years ago).

Our nutritionist suggested adding Zinc after the CF conference talked about chemo patients having appetite problems. I had Zinc on hand, and tried it, but it's old. I didn't notice a difference in using it, however do vitamins really lose their punch???

Best Wishes

Hi Sally,
This probably wont help much, and may have been mentioned already, but have you tried, "Boost" or one of those other nutritionally complete drinkable meals? Its not like actually "eating" something , but you will still get the nutrition. I know how hard it can be when there is no appetite at all. I tend to eat yogurt when that happens, because i always like yogurt even when there is no appetite. You have to have something, because if you continue to not eat anything (or enough) you're body will soon let you know it. Force something in, because you have to if you want to stay well. Good Luck !!

When I was diligent (a rare occurance) I'd mix all of the following in a blender with crushed ice:

one pkg scandi
one small banana
one yogurt
and a scoop of GenSoy - it's a powder that has carbs and protein

Being a diabetic, I don't count calories, I count carbs - so this one was a whopper!

But, alas, the motivation/drive just isn't there - though I have the resources...
haha

calisally: at the age of 8 i was given a gastro ostomy, which fed me over night through my stomach, but as i got older i became very embarrassed of it being there. so at 14, i had it taken out and began having my feed through a nasal tube. it took patience and practice to learn and get used to putting the tube in when i needed it, but it has been the best thing ever. all i do now is put the tube in each night with the help of a glass of water, have my feed overnight, then take the tube out in the morning. it is much better than having a ugly tube permanantely in my stomach on show. so my advice is to try the nasal tube, before something more permanent!

The only thing i can suggest is supplement your B vitamins. I lost my appetite for a while when i was frequently taking oral antibiotics (Cipro and Bactrim) and i read somewhere that oral ABs can seriously deplete your levels of B vitamins which can effect appetite. It worked for me and my appetite is now good again. I would try zinc also, if they are old it is certainly possible that they have lost their punch, all mediations have a use by date.

CaliSally,

The test performed to determine if and how slow my digestion process might be, was a GASTRIC EMPTYING STUDY.

The medicine they prescribed me was metoclopram, 5 mg (1 each meal).

I just started, so I don't know quite how well it works.

Good morning, I am the husband of the beautiful 38 yr.old "princesskc2". I read in your reply that you have a slow digestive tract. My wife is suffering from what the doctors are calling a nerve disorder from the brain to the stomach. When she eats, she goes into terrible gramps and blocks up. The ONLY thing the medical world has come up with is having her drink a half of gallon of Miralax. This process takes 10-12 hours to flush out her GI tract and she has experinced a 10 lb. weight drop in the passed 6 mo. She had a hestirecomty 6 months ago and that is when it all started. Anything to share?
