We mostly have hardwood floors, too. Put them in long before deciding to have kids. I like to be able to see that the floors are CLEAN -- with carpet, who knows what's harboring in it -- plus, it's so easy to let vacuuming slide if you don't see he dirt, dust, dog hair <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Oh, and just wait 'til your child becomes a busy toddler and grosses you out by picking up things on the playground and putting them her mouth or nose. I've survived ABC gum and leaves up the nose. Little pet hair doesn't seem so bad. Bleah!
