Pulmozyne for my 18 month old

I am new to this site. My daughter is 18 months old and was diagnosed with CF when she was 2 weeks old. She recently had her first pulmonary function test. The results showed the possibility of mild blockages in her lungs. The doctor gave us 2 choices. First, do nothing and have her retested in 6 months or to start her on Pulmozyne. Not sure what to do. Is she too young to start on pulmozyne? If she has blockages I don't just want to sit and do nothing but just not sure if I should start her on pulmozyne or just wait it out and retest her to see if the PFT shows the same results. We do in next week to talk it out with the doctor and make our decision. Any advice would be appreciated!

I personally do not think she is too young for it. Nathan has been on it for so long that I do not remeber how old he was when he started it, but it was pretty young. If the doctor thought she was too young, I doubt that he would give it as a choice. I think I remember Nathan being in a study for testing it for kids under the age of five when he was just a couple years old, but he has done so many studies, I could be wrong.

Hi Melissa, My daughter just turned two and just started pulmozyme. We are on it preventatively, as she has no lung involvement yet. Its pretty simple nebbed med, it goes pretty quickly, and I've seen no negative side effects so far. I guess I'm trying to assure you that it would probably be a good thing to consider. A lot of the adults around here feel it is a drug that has helped a great deal.

DS has been on it since he was two also. He was put on it as a preventative. One thing I noticed the first time he used it was that his nose ran. He always has nasty thick nose boogies and his nose never ever ran before. The brochure refers to pulmozyme as being like little scissors which chop up the dna within the mucus or something like that. Figured it liquifed his nasal mucus being that we used a mask on him. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
