question about CFRD

Hey. I do not have CFRD and last I check, my labs were fine. However, I am prone to have hypoglycemia. It usually happens when I am stressed, sick, or not eating right. Usually when my sugar drops, I get naseas, flushed/hot, shaky, weak and sometimes sweat. It start feeling it when my sugar goes below 90. I will eat something and be okay. My CF dr does know about this and told me to just keep an eye on it. Now, the other night my sugar dropped, but I had things happened that never happened before. I had just eaten 2-3hrs before it happened. I started having nausea but didnt think much of it. About 10 mins later, I was setting up my IVs (yes, I'm still on them..4 wks total..but tonight is the last dose!) and I got really light headed. I was looking down at the recliner and it began to sway side to side. I stopped what I was doing and looked up, I had huge black spots in front of my eyes (like when a bright camera flash goes off too close to your face). I quickly grabbed my machine and something sweet and sat down so I wouldnt fall. I took my sugar and it said 92. I took it 2 minutes later and it was 75. It took a huge drop in a short time. Lucky my husband got home from work right when this was happening. He got me some juice. My sugar finally came back up, but I was so tired from it I had to take a nap. I have never had black spots and dizziness. DH is very concerned about how fast it dropped and the syptoms I had. He said if it happened again then we were calling my CF Dr. DH wanted me to ask you guys what you thought. Anyone have this happen? Could it be the start of CFRD? Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't know if it is the start of CFRD or not, but just wanted to say that it has happened to me before. I am prone to having hypoglycemic episodes. I have also had my glucose test done and my numbers were great. I did have an episode once; I had just pulled in the drive-way and got out of the car. I knew my sugar was dropping but I thought I could wait until I made it home. As soon as I made it to the door, I started seeing spots (just like a camera had gone off). I got inside and got something to drink and tested my blood sugar. I believe it was in the 30's or 40's. When my sugar drops, it can get very low. I have heard it mentioned that it can be the start of getting diabetes, but I don't know for sure. Hope you get it worked out.

Ack, like Allisa, I don't know if that is the start of CFRD, but you should be on the lookout for more lows.

I have had that happen more than a few times, once at the grocery store I even passed out while in line! When I started to see spots like you did, I (half conciously) took a Mt. Dew out of the case and started to drink it right there. When I came to, my head hurt and I had fallen and spilled the Mt. Dew all over the checkout and myself. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> I'm guessing my bloodsugar was probably about 20-30 when that happened.

At the first sign of feeling weak, make sure you get juice asap and sit down. Carry around a piece of candy everywhere you go in your purse to be safe. Certainly mention it to your doc and he can probably give you more tips as well.

I dont know if this is a sign of diabetes or not but what could be happening since you said you ate 2-3 hours before this happened, if you have digestive issues you prolly aren't digesting your food quick enough so thats why your blood sugars drop. sometimes this happens to me. low sugars are the worst feeling. hope you figure things out.
