hey allisa, i'm sorry that you're having to get ivs at all but like most people have said i think doing the peripheral little ivs in your hand/wrist/arm would be harder than the picc. i know when i was really little (don't know if it was before picc lines or they just didn't use one on me) i had midlines and the small peripheral ivs. the small ivs only lasted maybe 2 days for me max because the veins just couldn't handle the strength of the medications for very long. i always requested emla (sp?) cream which is a topical numbing cream they put on different potential sites they might want to put the iv in and it numbs the skin so you don't feel anything. that was years ago so i don't even know if they still have emla cream but i'm sure they have something like it.
i don't want to sound insensitive but you might just need to suck it up and get a picc. i used to use the tube part of a tube sock or gauze, long sleeves, etc to cover mine up so i didn't have to look at it (aka have people ask questions about it )

hi allisa, i definately can understand why you'd be upset and nervous about going on IV's, everyone is the first time. you may want to look into a midline, its not as long as a PICC and its not a peripheral either. it's in between and it can last up to 6 weeks if it's done really well. That is typically what I get. This has been the year of midlines for me, i usually never get respiratory issues. but i would look into that, its better than having to have a nurse come every few days to re-stick you for a peripheral. the only issue i have had with a midline is that it has made my arm ache a bit, but if thats the case your doctor should prescribe a pain med for you and it'll be all good. if you want more information feel free to PM

good luck!!

The biggest things that I have had done is an X-ray, blood draws, and an enema.</end quote>

I'm pretty sure I'd rather have a PICC line than an enema, but that's just me.

For the record, I have a port and love it. You said your sister has a port; have you considered that or would it have the same problems for you that a PICC has?

I'd also encourage you to try the PICC - they sound scary, but after your first infusion at home you will be wondering how you lived without them. If you get it placed in IR by a surgeon who knows what they are doing, you will feel the PICC less than your hand placement.

I may be wrong about this, but I think I've also read that they are better for your veins because the drug is delivered further down where the vien is wider...
