question about nebs

Hi. My son does nebbed albuterol 3x/day with a mask, pulmozyme 1x/day with a mask, and uses an inhaler 3x/day with a mask and a spacer. I have been using a new (clean and boiled) neb and mask every treatment, or spacer and mask every time he uses the inhaler. So I boil nebs, masks, and spacers for the inhaler once a day (I have enough of all to get through one day). Is this necessary? Do I need to use a new one every treatment?

Probably best so nothing -- pseudo, etc. grow in them.

We use a separate neb cup for pulmozyme, albuterol/atrovent & tobi. I used to boil them once a day and between times would rinse them out with very very hot water, but you're not supposed to do that 'cuz pseudo, etc. can live in tap water. Tobi gets really sticky and can get gummed up, so I DO rinse that one out, but boil it before using it again. L

Thank you. That's what I was asking, since he does albuterol 3x a day, do I have to use a new neb cup each treatment (I do).

Amber, I know it's a pain, but it's best - things can grow so quickly in those nebs! We were told to always boil after each use (we just boil after we have none left to use). You might want to consider just getting extra nebs....it's worth the extra $$ to not have to boil so often.

Good luck!

what do they do in the hospital? where I go, they just put the nebs in a plastic bag and reuse them for at least a week without rinsing or anything. So, why are we being so meticulous at home? I am fascinated by how much energy goes into boiling and sterilizing these things. I clean mine about once a week.

at my hospital they are thrown away after each treatment.

bacteria grows quickly any any hospital that reuses nebs for a week should be reported to the CFF and have their accreditation revoked.....

There is no way I would boil all my stuff everyday!

I have 6 neb cups. I use one per day for my treatments and cycle through them. And boil them 3 at a time. I've always done this and never had any issue
