question about nebs

Hi all,<br>
I was thinking about this washing and sterilizing stuff this
morning. Josh just started pulmozyne on Wednesday. The
instructions said to let the nebulizer cup soak in warm sudsy water
and than rinse. The other option is not an option for me as my old
kitchen in my 40 to 40 year old house does not have a dishwasher
(that is beside my husband and I <img border="0" src=
"i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" alt="Smile">).<br>
To sterilize it said s to boil them or soak in vinegar every other
day. ; I read on this site that vinegar was a no no. Why is Vinegar
an no-no, what the problem with tap-water, and will the neb cups
last if I boil them everyday. He has a new pro-neb ultra by Pari
and the nebulizer cups that should last for 6 months.

I got this from the CF website:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/ID=4441/TYPE=1708/StoppingSpreadGerms.pdf
">http://www.cff.org/ID=4441/TYP...SpreadGerms.pdf
</a>

It talks all about the different ways in which you can clean your nebs other then boiling them. Vinegar is a no-no, because it is not strong enough to kill off all bacteria. Tap water also contains PA and Cepacia, that's why in addition to washing your nebs in hot soapy water, you should also follow that up with one of the cleaning ideas mentioned in the link.

It's best to boil. Pseudo, etc. can live in tap water, can live in distilled water. It seems like a pain, but I feel better safe than sorry. Several people here use the microwave bags for breatpump parts to sterilize neb cups.

As far as getting spares -- call your clinic or the hospitals respiratory therapy department. When we go to the clinic, the RT usually fills up a huge bag for us full of neb cups

Here's the link again, I hope it works this time:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/ID=4441/TYPE=1708/StoppingSpreadGerms.pdf
">http://www.cff.org/ID=4441/TYP...oppingSpreadGerms.pdf
</a>
If it doesn't work, go to this site: www.cff.org

When the homepage has loaded, look to the top of the screen and click on "Living with Cystic Fibrosis", then click on the sub-menu "Staying Healthy". To the right of the screen you will see a link called "Stopping the spread of germs". This is a pdf document, so you will need Acrobat Reader to read it.

Hope this is clear. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks Liz. I have that pamphlet or one pretty similar too it.
Though the section on cleaning the neb cups is not in it. I just
finished boiling nebs while I'm finishing my homework. Big test on
Thursday in Ethics and small paper due in Statistics.
