question about sinus involvement

This morning, Alyssa just didn't look right to me. Its hard to describe -- like her eyes are sunken in but her cheekbones are swollen. She has green puss draining from the corner of one eye, is very nasal sounding and keeps complaining (in tears) that her under her cheekbone hurts. It totally seems like it would be her sinus to me. Her nose has a little drainage, but she is sniffling a lot. She has a dry cough, but not a really junky one.

I'm going to call the CF center in the am to see if they want to start her on an abx....again! But I'm curious about others who have sinus symptoms as part of their CF. How does it present? Is it constant sinus issus, multiple sinus infections, or some other component. Alyssa has never had any sinus problems before, but she's only just turned 4 so I'm wondering if this is the start to a concerning trend.

Yes it does sound like sinus stuff. I wouldn't worry yet though that this may start a "concerning trend" because with winter and the dry weather many non cf people have sinus infections right now. So don't worry yet. :)

For my son (age 13) who has pretty severe sinus disease (6 surgeries thus far and one more next week) he presents with a non productive, sometimes constant cough, worse upon awakening and when lying down to go to bed. He does complain of tenderness under his eyes and sometimes above his eye brows. One thing he started using about age 4 was a netty pot. It is pretty easy to get used to, I have tried it myself so I could understand how it feels. My non cf son uses it whenever he gets a cold as well. You can make you own solution with water that you have boiled and let cool, 3 tbsp of kosher salt and 1 tsp of baking soda to 1 quart of water. I think that is the right combination, it is what we use anyway. You can google it and see what comes up. Our ENT gave us the recipe years ago.

Good luck, I hope your daughter feels better.

Could she have conjuntivitis in that eye with the drainage? Are her eyes itchy? A couple of times my kids have gotten conjuntivitis with a cold cause they rub their nose and transfer those germs into their eyes when they rub their eyes. It sounds like it could be sinus stuff, I would call too; she may need antibiotics. I think Maggie was around 4 when we started HTS nebs via a face mask..This has helped cut down on the amount of times she has needed antibiotics.

DS had sinus like issues from day one. In the NICU they were forever suctioning his nose and getting thick mucus out and we did it at home as well with saline. And sometimes he would have a little discharge coming from his eye, but it was by no means greenish, pus.

When he was 4 we did get him to try using a saline rinse, also pulmozyme with the mask seems to make his nose run when he's congested. Might be worth it to try. And it could "just" be a cold turned sinus infection and may not necessarily mean the start of chronic sinus issues. Hopefully it's just a rarity for her.
