question about testing

I am hoping that someone could shed some light for me that is a bit more educated on the CF subject and testings procedures than myself.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and took the cf screening the ob offered. CF was positive in my blood work which I assume I'm a carrier, but what I understood him say was the baby carried the positive gene... All that was done on me was blood work they have done no other testing on me or the baby.
Now they did write my husband an order to have a sweat test done? Now from what I have read they only do these on infants and children to actually diagnose CF, and the blood work would detect the CF gene? Is this correct?

But from what I understand sweat tests are used on anybody, regardless of age. other than newborns, because it's difficult to get enough sweat from them. plus insurances probably require the sweat test first, and if it's positive or borderline, they will move ahead to genetic testing for your hubby. I am not sure how they know your baby has the gene, without maybe an amniocentisis, or some other test.

I would definitely call them and ask for more info on that though. And ask them about your test also, what the test was called, what mutation they found, etc. etc.
there are at least 1500 mutations, so I've been told, so I don't know what they mean in saying "positive" gene.

Hope I didn't confuse you more, like I said there are alot of nice and helpful people, full of CF knowledge, and will DEFINITELY be a HUGE help to you. They HELP me soooooo much.

The test was the AFP screening done between 16/20 weeks which can detect if the expecting mother is carrying a fetus with certain genetic abnormalities such as cf. No I don't think I got a lot of clear information from the office, mainly just confusion.
All that my Dr. told me was that there was a positive gene for CF he didn't say anything about different mutations types. Dr said if the testing was positive on him they would do more test on me and the baby. Whatever that means, I think the more I read and try and learn to more confused I become. I'll call and see what they say tomorrow thank you for your help and I will keep you posted.

The sweat test will not give results as to whether a person is a carrier or not. Sweat testing is used to diagnosis, positive or negative, of actually having the disease CF. Also, saying CF was positive in your blood work sounds more like a diagnosis of CF for you, but don't mean to scare you in any way by saying that. Easier said than done, right? Hope not!


First thing tomorrow, I would call your OB and get a clearer explanation of "what" was positive in your blood work and "why" they are sweat testing your husband, not genetically testing for a carrier status?


I hope someone else can be of better help, but this really stood out to me in your post. Very confusing! Anyhow, please keep us updated with your situation and congrats on your pregnancy.

Also, saying CF was positive in your blood work sounds more like a diagnosis of CF for you, but don't mean to scare you in any way by saying that. Easier said than done, right? Hope not!
