I have to admit this one is confusing even for me. First of all you mention that you had an AFP blood test. That test does not test for CF, it checks for spina bifida and Down syndrome and other chromosome abnormalities.
If they did not test the baby and only drew your blood there is not way to know anything about the baby. Even if the AFP is positive for Down syndrome it doesn't mean the baby has Down syndrome only that your chances are increased.
The CF and AFP tests are two different tests. My recommendation is to request a copy of the test that was positive and contact a genetic counselor in your area to set up an appt. and have it explained. Your doctors office should also be able to refer you to a local genetic counselor.
You can also find out the name of the test that was ordered and what the actual results are and let me know and I can probable provide some guidance.
Sounds like some miscommunication somewhere.
