Question concerning gallbladder problems

As a mother of a child of cf I want to ask what else is going to happen. My son started having really bad pain on his right side. I know it has to be pretty bad because he never complains for fear of being hospialized. I carried him to his reg. doctor today because of the fact his cf doctor is 4 hrs away. She suspects that it may be his gallbladder. We have to go for a scan tommorow (7-11). The question here is has anyone experienced problems with their gallbladder? How was it dealt with? The doctors say it is fairly common for people with cf to experience this. I quess as a mother I am scared and worried about what else lies ahead for him. Thanks for any help with this newest problem.

Hi Kandi, I had my gall bladder removed in 1999 and the pain before knowing what it was was the worst part. Once they know that you have gall stones and they need to remove the gall bladder, the surgery part isn't really too big of a deal. They make 3 very small incisions and the procedure is quite routine (as I have heard) for the surgeons. It's scary before you know what the problem is though, for sure.

From the responses you'll get here, I'm sure you'll see many of us have had our gall bladder removed.

As for what lies ahead, no one knows that. There are many possibilities, although some people only get a few "things" and others get more "things". No one is the same. The best thing is to stay on top of all symptoms and have him do his breathing treatments regularly.

I had WRITHING pain when my gallbladder was acting up. Women who have had gallbladder issues and who have also had natural child birth say that the pain is almost identical. Yikes. It hurts like no pain I have ever had.

It's easy to detect - I had an ultrasound and they saw the stones. A few weeks later I had my surgery. No big deal at all. Much simpler than my hernia surgery. Coughing for the 1st day is hard, though. Difficult not to do CPT. But other than that, things heal quickly and it's a simple surgery.

No need to worry at all! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I had my gallbladder removed back in 2004. I had terrible pain in the middle under my brest bone / rib area....it felt like a knife twisting in me (most intense) or like someone punched me really hard there and just continued to push (after going a long time without eating). The only pain I've had that is worse than gallbladder was is kidney stone pain. The pain usually got more intense when I ate especially fatty foods or red meats. Finding out about my gallbladder wasnt too easy. I had a ultrasound and had no stones, just my gallbladder was small and had slug. So they told me that the slug was causing the pain. However, I knew my body, knew something was wrong I continued to push my doctor to do more test. He finally agreed and I had a HYDA scan. It's nuclear medicine (not as scary as it sounds). They inject dye into you through an IV, then you wait an hour before they scan to see how the dye has moved through your gallbladder. My gallbladder did not show up, they said maybe it processed slowly. So I went back each hour for additional scans up to a 4 hour limit. After the last scan my gallbladder still didnt show up. So they that meant it wasnt functioning at all. So I went and had surgery to have it removed. Due to a previous surgery and scar tissue, I couldnt have the laporscopic (sp?) surgery (aka band-aid surgery) which would have had a pretty quick recovery time. my surgery was more involved and I spent a few days in the hospital.

Danyell,
All I can say is OMG you are the only person I have ever heard of besides myself have that happen - ultrasound show nothing really out of the ordinary, and hyda scan not showing the gall bladder at all. I also had a CT Scan and everything looked fine on that. With the Hyda Scan they sent me for an ultrasound to find my gallbladder and marked me with a marker so they could focus on that area .. still they saw nothing. They told me mine was non-functioning as well. Turns out it was so full of gallstones (when they removed it in 2004) that the dyes weren't able to get into my gallbladder and highlight it.

The pain I had with the gallbladder attacks was horrendous. I felt sharp stabbing pains, I would feel like someone was squeezing me tight around my chest and I couldn't breathe. I would end up hunched over the toilet throwing up most times especially towards the end of the tests right before I had surgery. Everytime I had one I just knew I was going to die. I noticed I had worse attacks when I drank caffeinated beverages. I cut them out of my diet about a month before my surgery cause nothing else seemed to help (I cut down on fatty foods, gresy fods, spicy foods nothing stopped it until a stopped drinking soda and other caffeine products). Once I stopped drinking those I didn't have an attack the rest of the time til I had surgery. I have 3 little scars on my stomach and one in my bellybutton, but you can't really see it. I had surgery at the hospital and went home that afternoon. I had a hard time taking deep breathes for a day or so because of the pain for the incisions. Also had a hard time breathing cause they had me so doped up on pain meds riht after surgery. My mom had to sit with me and tell me to breathe because I was so relaxed that I just wasn't breathing - a little freaky that you can be THAT relaxed. I still get some phantom pains every now and then, but nothing like I used to get.

I got the news from the doctor today and they say that everything is all right. I had them fax and send copies to his cf doctors to look over to be sure. Thanks for all the support. Maybe we will find out soon what is causing the pain in his side.

Sorry to hear that Kandi, it's hard when they can't identify the problem! I hope they can find the cause of pain real soon. Keep us posted.

read my blog entry 'Gallbladder' and just a warning there's a picture.
I would be skeptical of them saying it isn't the gallbladder since my ultrasound didn't show that anything was definitely wrong either.
