Amy,

If you get some more info on the new coughing technique, could you post it. I'm kind of confused. I read the blog and am still not sure I'm doing it right.

I talked to my physical therapist today and she said she thinks it is called active cycle breathing. I will look up more about that. She is also a big fan of Doc Warrick and she had the newest model of the respirtech vest in the clinic today. It was the one with the triangle waves, which I guess is supposed to be the best. She was very interested in your info Amy, and so I am going to direct her to your blog.

Hi Amy,

I wrote about this about six months ago on this site when we were talking about breathing exercises. I think that is when you first started coming to this site.

So when you are doing this you are creating back pressure in your lungs right?

I did this and something similar to this when I had a chest cold several months ago. I took a plastic tube and placed my hand on the end with the other end in my mouth of course. I clost my lips tightly around the tube and when I inhale while my hand is covered on the end I feel some back pressure and when I exhale I also hold the end of it with creating a vibrating action with my hand against the tubing. Sort of like an inspiratory muscle trainer.

I believe this is all similar to what you are describing. I was not sure if this was safe but if we are using our own pressures I guess it is much safer than using another device to create a pressure within our lungs.

It helped me get up some stuff where the vest could not. I used it all because when you get a cold with a transplant you want to always be as clear as possible.

I taught the technique to Sean last night and he caught on very quickly. It's working great! He's really coughing up some nasties which is great because he usually doesn't have much of a cough.

Thanks for sharing the info Amy!

The representative from Respirtech who is a respiratory therapist visited us last week to train us on my son's vest. He described this technique. He said that air is trapped deep in the lungs. That is why the average person takes a deep breathe every few hours - they need to clear this air deep in their lungs. I think this technique that you all are describing clears the mucus in this area.
