Question for CF moms

My son was in daycare for almost five years of his life, and at the same time I was teaching 6th graders. At the time, it didn't seem like we were sick anymore than usual. However, now that I have been a sahm for the past 16 months, I can say that I have been sick quite a lot less than I was before. It would be hard to say what he was bringing home from daycare and what I was picking up at school, but I can say that I have noticed a difference in the past year with the fact that I have a lot less colds, which leads me to believe I was picking up a lot more myself at school than he was brining home, since he is still going to school himself everyday while I'm home with the baby - did that make sense??

I am a SAHM with no plans to return to work until Amelia (or her younger sibling if I have another baby) goes to school. DH and I will probably not put her into nursery school since we live on one income now. As far as germs go, I am as careful as I can be but I don't want to limit Amelia's experiences too much.

It seems those of us with lung capacity at 70% or above do the best, as well as the SAHM's.

you will MOST DEFINATELY get sick more with having a child 100% no question about it. That happens to the 'normal' family. My DH has actually caught more of our daughters colds etc than I have but I catch them 'worse' I have one right now and I have had 2 others since the fall plus the stomach flu, normally I would probably have had 1 maybe 2 (our daughter just turned one).

I think it is best to be a SAHM and wish we would have arranged things this way however that being said it wont limit your exposure, it will just change the timetable.

I talked with my pediatrician and they said it all boils down to this... whatever year they go into a group setting whether its daycare or school will be the year they get sick ALOT. So she said if I had her in a center daycare that is worst case with # illnesses and they will be sick every month at least once but they will get most of it 'out of the way' that first year, smaller home daycare will get sick a bit less but still will get sick a # of times during the season and will get the 'rest' the next year, staying at home will get very few depending on how much they leave the house though and then the first year they are in school they will be SUPER sick as it is mass germ exposure all at once from all the kids.

I am on disability so I have the opportunity to keep my twins at home with me 24/7. When I'm too sick to care for them, my mom and MIL come to help out. The twins started preschool in August 2007. They brought home two colds from there in 5 months. I caught one of them.

I purposefully picked a preschool with a small class size, student to teacher ratio is 12:2. And right now there are only 11 kids in the class (two of them are mine!) so even better. The school is clean, I was really impressed they purell the kids hands if they see them sticking fingers in their mouth. They also use purell before each snack. The class is only 2.5 hours a day, twice a week. That's 5 hours a week. Another reason I picked this school was to get the kids slowly adjusted for kindergarten. They are only 3 right now and may have one (or two) more years of preschool left.

Your child will bring home illness. Your child will get you sick. It may not be every time, but it will happen.
