Hmm. Maybe you could check around (perhaps call the manufacturer?) and get the machine checked to make sure it is working properly? This would only apply, though if it is that they lose it over 2-3 years of use, as opposed to some components simply aging and losing it (like carseats and their expiration date- the plastic isn't as strong as it ages).
And don't forget to get a new filter if you do use it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .
