Staph & MRSA is becoming more of a problem in general not just with CFers. Rosie ODonnel almost lost a finger from it. I heard of a child having it in his eye & going blind. The difference is that with CFers it can be more then the typical problematic issue.

I suggest NOT going. Unless you can be assure any precautions have been made. I dont think most people realize how severe staph or MRSA can be unless dealing with a health issue like CF.

This issue was addressed in my recent issue of Parents magazine.

We had similar situation last year. DH's uncle has rheumatoid arthritis and some other issues and ever since DS was born he's been battling with an infection in his hip. Every time they go in to try to do a hip replacement, he gets an infection. Not MRSA, but staph. Last summer he was going to be at a wedding and we were concerned about the risks of exposing DS to it.

His doctor indicated that there shouldn't be a problem as long as there weren't any open sores. The uncle had been off IV antibiotics, no open wounds AND because DS is always on the go, we didn't think we'd have a problem 'cuz we seriously doubted a then 3 year old would be hanging with the older group when there'd be cousins to keep him entertained.

We went to the wedding -- was about a zillion degrees in the church, so very short service, limited contact with any of the relatives and THEN we found out the reception was being held a the VFW, which allows smoking (LOTS of smoking), so we bowed out of that and took DS out for supper instead.

My son had a boil (staph infection possibly msra) on his leg this summer, so I have been reading up on it. Yes, you can get catch it from others. Family members are the most likely to catch it. I would not go to the party. The risk is probably low but it wouldn't be worth it. A lot of people in the population carry staph but there family has an active case now. I can only imagine that the boy has a serious complication such as the staph infection is in his bloodstream and thus needed IV's. That being the case, I don't know why his parents see the need to still have a birthday party. I wouldn't feel bad in the least for explaining that staph is a bacteria that you want to avoid. However, they may not understand since they don't see that others are at risk.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Assuming they still have his birthday party, Vinny will be hanging out with his grandparents while me and dad stop by. Luckily he's so young he doesn't even know what he's missing. I wasn't sure if I was just being overly cautious. I'm going to call his mom in a little bit, see how her and her boy are holding up. Maybe they'll be postponing the party. I will update you guys. Thanks again!
