ok im only 19. and im not lookin to get pregnant anytime soon. but i do know i want to within the next couple years if possible. how do you know if you should try or not? should i talk to my doctor first before i try? this has been a topic i've never really been taught or talked to about. my doctors have never said anything about it. a few years ago when i was still in the kids clinic my doctor told me he could see me being able to have a normal life and a family. and that made me feel good. but over the past couple years...well since i've been in the adult clinic i have went down hill. my pfts stay around the 20's and 30's. but i never really push myself to do better. i was admitted to the hospital tuesday and got out yesturday. i have a picc line and about 10 more days of IV antibiotics. so my goal is to try alot harder then i;ve tried before to get my lung function as high as i can. (this makes my fourth time in a year being sick) before i had hardly ever gotten sick.
so what should i do? im scared they will tell me i shouldnt try, or that i wont be able to have kids of my own <img src="i/expressions/brokenheart.gif" border="0">

Bobbie,

I'm going to be honest with you. You would most likely rather hear it from me than your doctor anyway.

Currently, your FEV1 is too low...Most CF doctors recommend that you must have an FEV1 of 50% - 60% or greater. Some doctors say 50% others say 60% is the cutoff. My doctor says 60%.

There is a good deal of logic to that. When you are pregnant, it is common to lose about 20% of your lung function with just the pregnancy alone! Now, if you were to get sick or something, then what??? Not to mention, there aren't too many antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy depending on the bugs that are in your chest.

One girl that comes to mind is Charlotte1984. That girl I feel so bad for. She was in good shape and decided to have a second child. Her FEV1 was 60% or slightly higher. Well, she sadly got pnemonia and has been in and out of the hospital three times now. Her current FEV1 is in the 30's. She is feeling better but will most likely have to deliver earlier than expected due to all the complications.

There are many other CF parents that had very normal pregnancies and deliveries. I'm not saying that everyone gets sick or anything. I'm just saying you must be prepared for anything. However, they all lost lung function during their pregnancies and are trying very hard to gain it back. Some have gained it back while others are still struggling.

I do believe that anything is possible. However, you must start taking better care of yourself. We all know that CF progresses; however, you weren't sick that often until now. My guess is that you started slacking off which in turn led to more hospitalizations and downtime. I do feel that you have a chance to regain at least half of the lung function you lost IF you become more compliant. I do think you have a chance!

I know CF sucks. Trust me! But you can do it! You will be coming off IVs soon so you now have your best chance to start off on the right foot. Good luck! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

The first thing you need to do is start working on your health. You want your FEV1 to be over 50%, ideally higher than that. The studies show that if you are below 50% then getting pregnant can have an adverse effect on your health and long term survival. Right now your lungs are in no condition to handle a pregnancy. And pregnancy isn't even the hardest part... taking care of a child 24/7 is exhausting.

You can start working on yourself, getting and KEEPING yourself healthy and use your future plans of pregnancy as your motivation. Once you become a mom, going into the hospital is not as easy as it is now.. you have to leave your precious little baby/child. And let me tell you, there will be nothing harder. Plus you have to have someone who can take care of them or help you out at home if you do home IVs.

If you ask your doctors right now they will tell you don't get pregnant. I can pretty much guarantee that. After you show that you can put the effort in to get healthy and can maintain that health, then it is the time for the conversations to start.

Good luck to you. I'm sure the others will have lots of advice as well.

hey girl. push to get that fev1 up. i was at 79% when i got pregnant and then two months after i had morgan i went down to 47%. luckily it went back up to 79% after the meds, but i think it's back down.

its not the pregnancy at all that was hard on me, it's taking care of the love of your life. it's so much harder than some people make it look. the other day i was exausted and we were at my aunts. i told them i had to go to sleep if they could take care of morgan. my husband was turkey hunting.

the month before i got pregnant my doctor was telling me how i was going to be able to have children. it was funny because i was pregnant at that appointment and i didn't know. i always thought in the back of my head that i may never be able to have children on my own. my sister has two girls and didn't get her tubes tied in case she had to carry a child for me.

well good luck with everything. just start doing all your treatments and exercise. take care.
