Sorry, I have been away for the last couple of days. Melissa is right it is peripheral (sp?) that they are giving him. He has had PICC's in the past when we were in the hospital for a longer term and getting TPN through the line. He liked to work his way out of these!

Thank you for all your info. The pics too. I didn't realize that it would bump out that much. It is good to get a visual.

in that case, i would not get a port. he could get years and years usage out of piccs. i dont see the point in putting him through the operation. for stays of a week or more, a picc is ideal. if less than a week, he could have mid-lines. they are like piccs but shorter and thinner, less traumatic.

here is a pic of a midline

Westonsmom, the size of the port and where it is placed has something to do with how they stick out. My port is located in the same area as Emily's, just higher and mine does not stick out hardly any. You really cant even tell it is there. I attached two pics, the one from the front, I circled the port so you can tell where it is.

not all port accesses are like that eli. the needle i use is a lot smaller than that and sits flush with the skin. i dont get a giant hole when it is removed either.
