IF I COULD SHARE ANYTHING WITH YOU, SEEK MORE MEDICAL HELP AND DEMAND A SWEAT CHLORIDE TEST AND GENETIC TESTING FROM YOUR PEDIATRICIAN TO RULE OUT CF. A LOT OF TESTS CAN GIVE FALSE POSITIVES AND SOMETIMES A SECOND OPINION IS AN EXTREMELY VALUABLE ASSET.

AT FIRST OUR PEDIATRICIAN Dx MY SON AS BEING ALLERGIC TO COWS MILK AND PUT HIM ON NUTRAMIGEN FORMULA AND HE BEGAN TO GAIN WEIGHT AND THRIVE. THEN A COUPLE MONTHS LATER HE DECIDED OUT OF THE BLUE TO PURSUE A SWEAT TEST JUST TO RULE OUT CF AS POSSIBLE Dx WE BYPASSED WHEN HE PUT HIM ON THE NUTRAMIGEN. HE WAS HEALTHY AND THRIVING WELL BUT HAD NASTY STOOLS AND FREQUENT STOOLS AHICH IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF CF. TURNS OUT HE DID HAVE CF AND HE HAS TWO OF THE MOST COMMON DEFECTS. NOW THAT HE IS ON CREON 10 AND VITAMAX HE IS A HEALTHY 27 LB 18 MONTH OLD LITTLE MAN AND HE HAS NO LUNG PROBLEMS TO DATE.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND KEEP US POSTED!

Thanks again for everyone's comments.

We are definitely going to ask for testing on this front. If the specialist doesn't want to do it, I believe our primary pediatrician would order the test as he already suggested it as a possibility for future consideration.

I'm so glad Adam is doing so well! 27 lbs!!!! Amazing. The little man of mine seems like he might never weigh 27 lbs!!!

The specialist is at a very large children's hospital, so I'm confident they know that it's possible to not be gravely ill and still have CF, but I fear that the negative Newborn screening test has as good as ruled out the possibility for them. And it does make it extremely unlikely (thank goodness), but certainly not impossible (unfortunately).

Hope you (and your kids) all stay well. The little man's cough continues, but is mostly gone when he's asleep, so he's at least getting a little more rest than he usually gets.

Well... since we've started on the pulmicort twice a day, the little man is definitely doing better. He seems to recover from colds on something more like a normal kid. The pulm was not impressed with his history, especially since he didn't have a cough at our appointment (AGAIN). Our regular pediatrician has started him on singulair to help with his sinuses and his ear infections and we are supposed to try weaning him off the pulmicort in April and see how he does.

My husband thinks this is a reasonable plan (he's a doctor, but not one who really knows anything about this). I told the regular pediatrician that as long as he continues getting over the cough that comes with a cold within a week of getting it, I will be satisfied that things are going okay. If he returns to coughing constantly for more than a week, I'm going to insist we pursue this further. Also, if he needs to continue the pulmicort past winter to simply function like a "regular" kid, I'm going to want to pursue this further also, as I'm not comfortable just assuming he's got "reactive airways" without assurances it's nothing more serious.

Thanks for your support. I'll be lurking and update if things take a turn for the worse. Right now we have been cough free for 4 days!!! Nearly a record.

I'm glad he is feeling better - just a word of caution... we went for 8 years thinking our daughter had "asthma with productive cough" and she too did "better" when on the steroid inhaler.... she also coughed more at night than any other time.

Read my blog if you want more details.... and yes, please keep us posted, I'm glad you and your husband are still keeping an open mind to following up on this....
