Random Questions

Hi...I have a 4 month old daughter with cf and I have some questions, they are kind of random but I am curious as to what ya'll do..

1. During summer barbecues can she be outside by the pool? Is propane better than charcoal?

2. I know I can't burn candles, but can I use flameless candles or candle warmers?

3. Can we use the ceiling fans in our house.

4. Are cats and dogs really that bad? We have 4 cats (1 is outside) and 2 dogs (both outside)

5. What about baking and cooking, should I be worried about flour, baking soda, etc,

6. What about cleaning products, what are the best to use? I know I shouldn't vacuum, sweep, or mop around her, for now, is this always...will she be able to do these things when she gets older? I know she'll probably never have to clean the cat box...lucky girl.

7. When we are outside, do I need to cover her up or can she be outside just like normal. What about when we are mowing or gardening?

8. Stuffed animals, pillows, blankets, how often do they need to be washed?

I know these might be kind of silly, but I'm not sure on some of these things.

OK, let's see:

1. Andrew goes to barbecues and swims in pools. (clean pools!) One thing to avoid is hot tubs. They breed bacteria and are gross for pretty much anyone in my opinion, but for CFers they are a no-no.

2. I burn candles. If the sent seems to bother Andrew, or anyone else in the house for that matter, I stop using them. But as long as it is not a scented candle that bothers your daughter, I have never heard that you shouldn't burn them.

3. Ceiling fans are fine. In fact, the air circulation is probably beneficial.

4. Most people will tell you pets are fine. We opt for no pets just for reasons of cleanliness, but as long as there are no allergies to the pet, your daughter should be just fine.

5. Bake away!....Oooey, Goooey, Fatty, High-Caloric snacks are sure to pack on the pounds!!!

6. We order our cleaning products from a company that produces non-caustic products, although most people have no problems with everyday Tide and Formula 409! You are right, assigning the litter box duties to another family member is probably wise.

7. Your daughter will be just fine dressed as you are dressed. Do watch her for overheating, though, especially in the summer months. Your clinic should discuss her needs for salt supplements with you.

8. Wash your daughter's pillows, blankets, and toys as often as you would wash your own. We keep a plastic cover on Andrew's matress to avoid problems with dust mites, which can cause allergic reactions for anyone, not just cfers. But his sheets get washed once a week, just like mine do. (Unless he has had nightsweats, then I wash them as needed.)

I remember starting out...these are all very good questions. Feel free to ask anything you would like and don't ever feel it is a silly question!

These are not silly questions at all. We all have them at first, and it's good that you're asking.

1. I think pool parties and barbeques will be fine. If there's a charcoal grill you probably want to keep her out of the smoke, but, you'd do that anyway. And away from the heat, of course.

2. I was told not to burn candles, but have heard very differing opinions. There are some very good candles that are soy based with no bad carbons except those associated with the burning wick. I agree with putting them out if the scent bothers her. We used to burn candles all the time, and we have stopped, but, I'm inching them back in, little by little to see how Emily reacts.

3. We do use our ceiling fans. I am more vigilant now about keeping them dusted than I used to be. In t he summer Emily seemed to be better with a ceiling fan than with the centeral air on. She coughed alot more when we used the central air, although, that could have been due to the fact t hat she had a cold during the one week we used it last summer.

4. We opt for no pets simply becasue I can't get the 4 of us humans up and out the door on time...what in the worls would I do with a pet??? But, I think they'd be good for a kid, cf or no cf. There are TONS of cf'ers on here who are WILD about their pets. So, it can't be all bad.

5. Nah, no worries. bake away!

6. Other than buying them more frequently (becasue I use them m ore often now ) I haven't really changed brands. I do read the fine pring to find things that say they kill psuedomonas and strep and the like...

7. Dress her like you would normally, I think. Emily is 2 and hated her hat and mittens all winter. Now it's spring and she won't leave the house with out them. Go figure.
I did have some concerns about gardening since psuedomonas can be found in soil (Probally other stuff, too.) It broke my heart because I think all kids should get t o experience squishing dirt between their fingers and waiting for the things they planted to come up. I asked about it at clinic and our pulmo said, yes, there are some risks, but it's a matter of what do I want her to experience. Psuedo is EVERWHERE. If we wash and sanitize after, try to keep gloves on her, keep her fingers out of her mouth...we are probably covering our bases as best we can. She's a tomboy...couldn't keep her out of the mud if I tried. What'cha gonna do?

8. I wash most of Emily's regular "buddies" weekly. I would like to phase out the stuffed animals because they do worry me (dust and allergens) but she is SOOO attached. Sigh. Sheets are changed everyother day, mostly due to her feeding tube leaking, or a soggy wet diaper in the morning. Or, oh yeah, coughing to the point of throwing up a t 2 am.

I'll be looking to see what other responses you get. Remember that you are likely to get very differet responses from different people. What works for one family might not for another, and these are mostly personal preferece t hings, not "clinical" do's and don'ts. Hopefully you'll find a happy medium among your respondes and begin to decide what's best for your little one.

1. During summer barbecues can she be outside by the pool? Is propane better than charcoal?
No idea on propane vs. charcoal, but I've been around both. My dad has always used charcoal. I've swam in all sorts of pools.

2. I know I can't burn candles, but can I use flameless candles or candle warmers?
You can burn candles. I've never heard otherwise. We burn candles in the house. They're good for smelly rooms. Just avoid incense. That stuff makes me hack.

3. Can we use the ceiling fans in our house.
Certainly.

4. Are cats and dogs really that bad? We have 4 cats (1 is outside) and 2 dogs (both outside)
Noooo way. Unless he has an unrelated animal allergy, pets are super. I've had dogs (really hairy golden retrievers), cats, hamsters, mice, birds, fish, a guinea pig, a ferret.

5. What about baking and cooking, should I be worried about flour, baking soda, etc
Nope. I've baked for years. My mom has taught me how to cook a bunch of stuff. As long as your kid isn't like... snorting flour, it's fine. And you wouldn't let a healthy kid snort flour either, methinks.

6. What about cleaning products, what are the best to use? I know I shouldn't vacuum, sweep, or mop around her, for now, is this always...will she be able to do these things when she gets older? I know she'll probably never have to clean the cat box...lucky girl.
One, I clean the ferret's litter box. They really only warn against cleaning cat boxes AFTER a transplant. Before that, it's not a big deal. As for cleaning, she can do that stuff when she gets older. I dust, I vacuum. I haven't needed to mop, but I can. She can do all of that stuff, no problem. Just don't let her like... snort the stuff in the vacuum bag. Ha.

7. When we are outside, do I need to cover her up or can she be outside just like normal. What about when we are mowing or gardening?
She can go outside like anyone else. I used to go outside all the time. I played in the leaves, in the snow, in the dirt. I dug up worms, played with frogs. Played in the woods, in streams and near ponds. I used to garden with my mom. Never mowed the lawn, but that was because my mom liked the exercise. If she had wanted me to, I could have.

8. Stuffed animals, pillows, blankets, how often do they need to be washed?
As often as you'd wash them for anyone else.
