well so i have been working out lately at the gym. two of my classes are weight classes. i only do the 5 and 8 lb weights, so i dont feel like i am overdoing it or anything.. (we do lots of chest, shoulders, arms etc..) well when it was time to do push-ups i could not do them because the pain in my collar bone where my port cathetar is felt like it was grinding or popping. have any of you who have ports had similar feelings with your port when you do certain things/activities? also when i role my shoulders back it pops too. uuuh i cant stand it, makes me queezy!

I've never had a problem with my port from working out or excercising. However, my port is sounds like is a lot lower than your, mine is located right above my right breast. Yours sounds like it was placed really high...maybe you could see about getting it moved lower?

Also, depending on when you had it placed, it may not be fully healed.

Sorry I dont have much advice.

I had something similar when I first had my port placed a couple years ago. Mine literally popped and made a grinding feeling whenever I lifted my left arm (my port is in my chest on my left side) above my head. It was also quite painful. When I put my hand over it I could feel it literally catch on my collarbone when I moved my arm/body a certain way.

I made an appointment to have the surgeon look at it and he agreed it was catching on my clavicle. Ugh. I ended up having another procedure to move it down after only about 8 weeks. What it came down to was that I have a quite large chest and while I was on the operating table gravity takes hold and the "breast tissue" takes up a very large area. LOL. They placed the first one so high trying to avoid burying it in breast tissue. In the second procedure they were able to move it down about an inch and it is very easy to access and not buried in breast tissue. It no longer pops or catches on my clavicle.

Sorry for the long rant, just wanted to mention my whole experience in case yours would be anything similar. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> As far as exercise goes, yes we can exercise with a port. Mine has gotten a little sore a couple times when I have really overdone it. Once from moving and another time from shoveling snow. Both times I just took it easy for a while and the soreness only lasted about a day. I just assume that the soreness is due to the fact that the port is stitched to the muscle in my chest wall so when I overdid it there was probably a pulling effect going on. I did read a post on here a while back where someone mentioned that they were told they could only lift up to a certain amount of weight with their port. I was never told such a thing, so it made me a little curious.

Good luck to you! I hope it feels better soon. Let us know if you have other questions!

Im with Autumn, I have quite large breasts too, and the first time I got my port I was a teenager and still "growing" so they put it up higher by my clavicle, I could touch it with my chin. I was furious, just because it was so high and bumped under my skin (couldnt ever wear a tank) so I got a surgeon willing to move it lower even though my breasts were still growing.

With my second one, they actually moved it lower than the first. It is hidden a little by my breast tissue but it doesn't bother me when I excercise and they don't really have any problems accessing it...I even talked my friend thru accessing it. The only problems i've had are that it moves alot so they have to be sure to hold it still.

My port is also lower on my chest. It is right above my right breast, almost in the very top of the breast tissue (yeah, you can imagine how happy I was about that!!). So with that being said, I've never felt that kind of pain while doing weights, etc. Now I did do some yoga last night and noticed on one of the moves that the area where my port is felt like it was pulling which caused a little bit of uncomfortableness... but that's about it.
