Results In Finally

Hi all,
I finally got the results of the third sweat test. The first was inconclusive, the second was 53 (was told this one was different methodology and only a screen), and now the third has come back 16 on one side and 20 on the other.

Dr is saying "negative". I guess I will accept this because those are pretty low numbers. We will continue to monitor Jake's asthma and investigate his digestive issues. We have a peds appointment this Thursday to discuss the possible malabsorption problem. If I find in the comming months that this process continues to mimic CF, I will ask for the genetic test. It's just that right now, I know that insurance will not pay for it.

I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. I thank each and every one of you and your children for being the wonderful human beings that you are. Keep up the good fight! /hugs to you all.

My son scored 12 on each arm with the sweat test. Through genetic testing he is found to have 2 mutations. Personally I am glad to know well before he is symptomatic. If your son is already symptomatic why wouldn't you push for it now? Each cold he gets that goes to his lungs and is treated with the wrong antibiotics is potentially lost lung function. Lost lung function is lost forever. Don't feel you are being pushy or negative thinking. You are the advocate for your son. He'll appreciate it and thank you one day. I know it's not easy. Take care. PM me if you have any questions or want to chat.

Thank you Lauren,
Yes I agree with you and I am going to push the issue at his appointment tomorrow.

I'm curious, what prompted you to test your son?

Dori -- do you know why the insurance will not pay for genetic testing? Is it because of the sweat test numbers being in the normal range? Have you heard this first hand from the insurance company? Is it possible the doctor is more behind not getting the genetic testing done than the insurance company?

I know you may have told us the answers to these before but I don't recall -- I just cannot understand an insurance company refusing to pay for genetic testing if the child is symptomatic and a doctor is behind it and recommends the testing be done -- would a letter of medical necessity help?

If it is the doctor who is standing in the way of the genetic testing then please try and find another doctor who will pursue it.

Best of luck! Please keep us posted
