Riding Horses

Over the last year and a half while at college I've been unable to continue my riding career. This has been the cause of my gradual PFT decline. I went back and looked at a graph of my FEV1s over the last 8-10 years when I was riding and saw ENORMOUS improvements when I was riding, espeically more often than once a week. Most people don't realize the physical strength and cardiovascular stamina involved in riding horses. I was so much stronger and in better physical shape when I was riding and I definitely recommend taking riding lessons if you have access to a barn in your area. If you would like more information on barns near you, just ask! I've shown American Saddlebreds for 10 years and know hundreds of barns across the country that you could visit. It truely is a wonderful activity.

Hi Justine,
What a great idea! I love horses, have always wanted one and to be around them but never have. I've never thought of taking riding lessons. I live in a rural area where there are homes with horses all over, but I don't know of any public riding places around here. You said you know of barns across the country, I live in Truckee, California. This is northern Ca, but the closest large city or more populated area would be Reno, Nevada. Do you know of barns there I could call? That would be so amazing.

My brother/sis in law own a horse farm. They are in the middle of selling the horses off because they are splitting up, but I had a ball for a long time. Even before they traded the cows for horses & opened their stables, they owned horses for their pleasure. I love these creatures & it is EXCELLENT exercise. I wish they lived closer, I would have gotten to ride more. OH WELL...ride on my friends!

To see actual improvements in lung capacity, how many times a week and for how long do you think you would need to ride? I'm looking into taking riding lessons and wonder how often, but being realistic, would be beneficial for me? I'm so excited!

I don't remember how long it took me to get results, but I remember how my mom talked about her riding lessons.(she doesn't have cf) but took hour long lessons once a week and saw improvements (once she wasn't so sore! the first couple times you're legs/arms can be sore for a couple days, just like lifting weights if you haven't for a while) after two or three weeks of riding once a week. She uses an albuterol inhaler sometimes and noticed she didn't have to as much and she felt better in general than she had. She could tell her lung capacity increased as well.
I actually am not sure of any barns in Nevada, or of the geography of the cities in california that are near you. Here's a link to a website with American Saddlebred barns in the US. ( http://www.saddleandbridle.com/issues/june05/June%2005%20HOC.pdf ) California has many, especially in SoCal. If there aren't any saddlebred barns near you, you might try your local listings for something in your town/area to start out with. Tell them you want to ride English(saddle seat more than hunt seat, hunt seat you lean forward too much, where as saddle seat you focus on sitting up very straight with GREAT posture, one of the most helpful aspects during the workout because your lungs can get more air).
Hope this helps!

Hi Justine!
Thanks for your post. My daughter who is 13 has CF. She has very good lung function-in fact she's always at 100% or better (unless she has an exacerbation). We truly believe that the fact she rides horses and plays basketball on a regular basis is why she is so healthy. We bought our little boarding facility 4 years ago. Danielle is expected to help with night chores, clean stalls and exercise and train her horse on a regular basis. I think being outside in the fresh air helps too! You can view some of her pictures on our website our website She is going to be very excited about what you posted-it's nice to see some of our personal theories might be right!
