Hi, this is S.'s girlfriend Rene'e. He is in the hospital and the doctor has put him on IV colistin...so far he is hating the way he feels. Have any of you been on this drug before? How was it for you? Thank you so much!

I have never been on that drug thru an IV before...I've been on it nebulized, didnt seem to cause me any problems that way, except that its extremely sticky.

So sorry Rene'e that S is in the hospital. I do not have any experience with Colistin but many others here do and I am sure they will be responding. Please let S know that we are all hoping he is feeling better and out soon. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

I've never taken Colistin on IV before, but I have inhaled it, and my body does not like it whatsoever! My chest tightens up, I get short of breath, and I feel sick. Like I sometimes almost feel fluish taking it. I hope that S feels better soon! Keep us posted!

Hi

No, the last time he gave a sputum (?) sample, it came back with a "Bug" that his doctor couldn't identify...the first sample was lost, and when they took another two weeks later it was still present. He said the has only had one other CF patient with the same thing and he said the Colistin has worked to fight it. His tests results from the lab (sent it to Colorado) should be back by Tues. I am just worried sick about him. He was just in the hospital less than 2mo ago, and about a week after he finished his at home iv meds he started really dragging again. When he started having fevers again and coughing up blood he went back to the hospital. His doctor seems more concerned than I usually see him...I don't know, I just really worry. S. seems in better spirits than me! We have a 4mo old daughter at home, and I just can't stand it when he's not feeling well. I've just never seen him go into the hospital back to back like that. I guess we just wait and see. S. asked me to come online to see if anyone had any feedback as to the side effects. He says he is extremely sore (body aches) his lips tingle, and he spiked a 102 temp, and is so weak even getting up to the restroom is a challenge. This comming weekend is going to be his first Fathers day and I want him home!!!

I really feel for you Rene'e. This must be so difficult especially since you have an infant who needs her mom in good shape. And how frustrating for S to have to be in the hospital so many times recently. Please try to get some sleep and maybe by tomorrow, after the medicine has a chance to work, he might be feeling a bit better. And there might be more posts on here for you with those who have had similar experiences.

Hopefully S will be feeling better soon or the test results that come back on Tuesday will give the doctors a better clue as to what his treatment should entail.

Again you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated.

I myself have never been on it but when I was in the hospital the last time for IVs, a few of the other cfers were on it...they said it made them SUPER tired and the guy in the room next to me said every time he goes on Colistin the only thing that makes him feel better is sweet stuff like candy (This guy went through Bit O' Honeys like they were his job, lol). Apparently Colistin can cause massive candy cravings

Ughh...i am soo sorry he is back in the hospital...thats's sooo frustrating and scary. And so disappointing with Fathers Day right around the corner. So unfair!

As to the drug...hmmm I want to say I have done it IV once but I'm not sure if it's that I'm thinking of or meropenem...they all sort of start to blur for me.... Anyway, I hate when they make me feel like that, fevers, aches and nausea....oh joy... That which doesn't kill us.....usually makes us wish it would, HA!

Give S our best, you will be in my prayers and I'll be pulling he gets released on good behavior in time for the big day.

I had these symptoms when on inhaled Colistin. I know that tingling lips is a common symptom. As for the other symptoms, they are rare but due happen as this is what happened to me on it.

Renee,

I'm sorry to hear that S is back in the hospital. It sounds like his doctor has some good information, but it is so scary when there is a new bug present. Please let us know when the tests come back what it is.

Thinking of you and the baby.

I have been on IV Colistin and I was also very very tired. it went away after a little bit but what was worse for me was the tingling feeling. The doctors said they were both symptoms and totally normal. Once they went away I started to really react positively from the colistin.

I'm really sorry to hear that he is in the hospital. I don't have any advice/answers to your questions but said some prayers for your family today at church and will continue to send thoughts and prayers your way.

I haven't been on IV colistin but whenever I go start on IV meds I usually have a high fever for a few days, then I feel better, I really hope S starts to feel better soon and can come home for Father's Day.

I hope he's doing better today. If you happen to know what he cultures, possibly others here on this site that may culture the same bug can let you know what's worked for them.
