safe around children?

In my opinion, this is a germy situation. I would give him hand sanitizers and tell him to use them regularly throughout the day, if he doesn't already. If that doesn't work, he should probably find a different job.

In one sense yes you can build up immunities to the germs the kids are carrying. Eventually you wont be getting as sick (first year teacher syndrome...lol). But little kids are a lot more germy than bigger kids. I have worked in a daycare setting and I was much sicker working with that age group than I am now. Now I work in an elementary school and I have been very lucky and not been all that sick. The thing with little ones is that they dont really know to sneeze/cough into their arms or blow their noses the right way, so you have to do it for them. At least if your bf worked with older kids (even kindergarten) they dont need help wiping their noses and stuff.

I hope he feels better soon!

I taught preschool (3 year olds) for 2 years. I got sick all of the time; and had to quit...
I loved working with kids but my doctor said it was too hard on me.

When DS was a baby and we discussed daycare with his doctor, one thing that was mentioned was making sure the baby room was separate from the "germy toddlers" and preschoolers, which they do.

Any other group -- babies, older kids would probably be fine, but as the parent of a preschooler -- bleah! His preschool/daycare works with the kids to make sure they cover their mouths & noses, wash hands frequently, but they're still learning.
