Salt Water

I had read about the salt water study that came out earlier this year with some positive results (I believe the New England Journal of Medicine). My questions are whether anyone has heard any follow up to that study and whether anyone has used a salt water pool as a means of exercise (and whether that is something anyone has suggested).

Thank you so much for any information you have.

Todd.

I haven't heard or read anything about a <u>salt water pool </u>but I have read about the salt water mist from the ocean. Basically, surfers who have cf have better lung functions from breathing in the salt mist that comes from being at the beach and spending time in or near the ocean water. I'm not sure how much time but I would think it would have to be a sufficient amount of time.

hi todd, im 21/cf from England. im going to be trying hypertonic saline very soon at hospital. i have been wanting to try it for a while now, but the doctor wanted to wait a while till my lung function was stable, because hypertonic saline can cause tightness. so now my readings are stable, i will be trying it out soon to see if it works for me. i first heard about it when i got a new doctor who was from Australia. she told me that in studies, patients with cf who surf regular have better lung function because of the sea water.when inhaled, the salt thins mucas. i cant wait to see if it makes a difference to me. i will let you no how i get on if you like??????????? <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

I started the salt water inhalers about two weeks ago. I would HIGHLY suggest it to anyone. The instant you turn the inhaler on you start coughing, that's how quickly it loosens everything up. I've been coughing up WHITE mucus, and I haven't had that in forever. It is truly amazing. You mix 10% Sodium Chloride witih 0.9%, and you inhale 4ml of the mixture. Takes about 15 minutes, but speeds up my Flutter by about 15 minutes because it helps so much!
