School problems continued...

I also inquired about a 504 and my son's school system said we did not need one. My friend actually attended a luncheon that Beth spoke at and told me that tardies and absences should not be held against them if they r CF related. My son had 10 tardies last year because of stomach aches/constipation.....never thought about it, but it doesn't look good on his offical record...so I asked the social worker at our CF clinic if this is correct that they don't have to do one, and she said they don't have to just for CF

So i'm confused wheter or not they actually have to do a 504, our school system has been VERY open and accomodating without one, so i've never seen a reason to push for one and not sure if I even can.....something tells me they don't just because of CF, even though most people assume they do.

I did find this link interesting:

In the State of Washington there is a non-profit organization called PAVE that advocates for families who need a 504, or anything else under IDEA. You might check into something like that in your state. Also, the school may be resisting because there is no funding for 504 accommodations like there is for an IEP. You have to go up the chain of command. All the way up to the district Superintendant if you have to.
Good luck!

I was told exactly the same thing by my daughter's school when I asked about a 504 plan. Because my daughters both get good grades, there is no academic need, therefore they do not qualify. Kaitlyn was hospitalized in mid November last year and didn't go back to school until mid January. They wouldn't even send a home bound teacher out. I don't remember how long the child has to be absent before they qualify for home bound, but by the time Kaitlyn got out of the hospital, they only had one week left before Christmas break so they wouldn't let her have a home bound teacher. So she basically went for 2 months without any school at all.

This year has been worse... She missed 3 days of school last month and the day she went back the English teacher made her take a test on which she got a 30% because she hadn't been there to read the material the test was on. I am still fighting that battle. I know I am going to have to get ugly and throw a fit to get anything done... I'm just trying to get through the holidays first. I have enough stress right now to get thru...

Good luck with your child's school... let us know how it turns out... Maybe it will give me some idea of how to proceed.

I'm a special ed teacher and CF definitely qualifies for a 504 plan and Aidan will definitely get a detailed one when he starts kindergarten next year...I will fight for it. You can go to court over it if you feel the need. Things I will fight for are:
-tutors for absences over 3 days
-no grade can be affected by absentee issues (missed tests ect...)
-no restriction on bathroom visits
-frequent snacks if needed
-extra drinks during day
-wiping down desks at end of day
-all kids have to wash hands upon entering classroom
-nurse comes down to my son to give him Creon (I am not going to risk his health and send him down where all the sick kids are..)
-I'm sure I will think of more. I don't spend hours everyday trying to keep him healthy only to let his health suffer at school
