Austin will be starting school soon. He is 6 and will be in the 1st Grade this year. When I met with his teacher to educte her on CF and his other conditions (Chiari malformation with shunted hydrocephalus) I found out his lunch time is at 10:30 this year. Last year it was at 11:30.

So this means it will be about 4 hours left of school time before he gets home. He will be so hungry. Do you think I should see if I could send him a snack for the middle of the day? The teacher did say sometimes she will have snacks. But I also want to keep him healthy. He is at a good weight now 49-50 pounds. But to me he is starting to look skinny. I think because he is getting taller.

I remember when from about the age of 1-4 he had the little pot belly going and now that he is getting taller you can really start too see every bone in his body.

If anyone has any suggestions how they would handle this please let me know.

I dont have a child with CF but growing up both my sisters were diabetics and they absolutely have to let you have a snack time for your child and you can send it in so it is something CF appropriate instead of a lowfat graham cracker or soemthing like they normally give out.

I woudl request every day at x time is his snack time and the teacher can choose to let him leave class and go to the office or coat rooom or just get it out and eat during class. You could even buy him a watch and program it to go off every day at that time and teach him to push the button to turn it off, this way you dont have to rely on the probably overburdened teachers memory.

Hi Paula

I have a daughter who will start 1st grade this sept. also... I wasnt even thinking about the "no snack situation", I remember my other 2 daughters had snack in the 1st grade, but I will have to look into it about Lara. (lara eats every hour on the hour too!)

I would definately explain the situation to his teacher , I dont see the harm of letting him eat something(10:30 is early for LUNCH) you can even suggest letting him go to the office for 10 mins. if she didnt want the whole class to start with the "Im hungry too, how come he can and I cant speeches" But I would think the teacher will realize that 4 hours is a long time for kids not to eat anything. Good Luck.

Thats a long time for any little one. Our school has snack up to 4th grade (I only know about elementary so far). Some kids have early lunch & some later & either way (before/after) it can be a long wait.

Prior to this year we were required to send in snacks for the whole class about once a month. Now we send in just for our own kid each day. The teachers always had something because there was always kids that didnt bring snacks.

I would check into further. I am sure they do something, but if not you need to tell them the issue for your son.
