SEVERE Acid Reflux

Has anyone taken Fosamax and had heartburn so bad that it caused nausea and vomiting for a week straight? I took my 1st dose of Fosamax last Tuesday and since then, I've been sicker (stomach wise) than I've ever been in my entire life. At first I didn't relate the heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and fosamax to each other. I ended up going to my local (non-CF) clinic and they thought I had a stomach virus so they gave me something for nausea. Well the next day I wake up and I'm vomiting blood so I went to the ER. They ran a tube thru my nose and down into my stomach and then pumped it out. Of course the only thing in my belly was mucus from my sinues, saline from them pumping it, and blood. They also had to give me fluids because I was dehydrated. The vomiting blood, they thought, was from busting a blood vessel in my stomach from throwing up so much. Anyways, it has now been a 7 days since I took Fosamax and I've had very little relief. I've been taking TUMS, prilosec, pepto bismal, and anything else I can find for heartburn and nothing is helping. Every morning I throw up anything in my stomach, which isn't much because it hurts too bad to swallow. My CF doctor is sending me to a GI doctor, but I can't get in until August 26th and I can't handle feeling like that long. Has anyone been thru this and if so, is there anything I can do for some temporary relief?

That was my 1st and ONLY dose I will EVER take! The ER doctor and my CF doc both said not to take it again, which I wasn't planning on taking it again anyways.

I have extremely bad acid refulx for years, plus Gastroparesis my food does not move from my small intestine to my stomach to get out. For the AR I've been using Prontonix for a few years now also Tums occassionally and using Relgan for the stomach issues, all going fine for some time now. I did try Nexium but it did not work out the side effects were irritating me too much. Good luck don't you just hate when something else acts up, I can't stand it. But make sure you get all the tests the uper endoscope and the drink with the scan you want to be sure.

I've had this problem for the last 30 years.
The only thing I've taken that really fixes the problem has been Omeprazole & even then sometimes I have to double the dose.
Post trans my trans DR put me on Fosamax & it did make me have even more heartburn.
I started hearing about the other (many) issues caused by Fosamax & told my trans doc 'I'll take my chances' when it comes to breaking bones.
So far I've only suffered a broken hand & that was on election day '08 when I punched a solid oak door. (Thank you PA for re-electing Jack "The Haditha Marines are all murderers" Murtha.)
I would strongly reccomend you do the same. Uh, that is- drop Fosamax, DON'T hit a solid oak door.

I had a similar problem taking Bactrim, but w/o the blood involvement and it only lasted about 5 days. I feel for you, it was completely horrible!!!!! You need to see someone NOW before you end up in the ER again. You're going to really damage your esophagus and /or stomach. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Wish I could help. Can your doc pull some strings, get you into a specialist sooner?
