Severe stomach pain

My husband has CF. This morning when he woke up he had severe stomach pain. It is located in the upper abdomen and it is causing his back to hurt too. It hurts a lot to lay down and he is really in a lot of pain. The pain seems to be on the left side and the abdomen is tender to the touch.

He called the oncall people at the hospital and the doc said for him to just wait and see his primary care doc tomorrow. But this amount of pain make me worry. He said that it is not the stomach ache you get when you don't take your enzymes. He says it feels like he has been kicked in the gut.

Anyone experience this?

Lisa, It can be any number of things.... If he's is in that much pain, maybe he should go to the hospital, i know it sucks to go to the e.r., but sometimes you have to go with your gut (no pun intended) I would never take the advice of any dr. over my own best judgement.. Hope all is o.k. God Bless you guys.. Joni 55 y/o f w c/f

oh man, have i had pain!! i dealt with weeklong bouts of SEVERE abdominal pain off and on for 6 years before they found the source!!

in my case it turned out to be an intersucception of the large intestine - a known and documented complication of cf. my went undiscovered for so long for two reasons:

1) i was not under the care of a cf doctor. mostly general physicians that would prescribe pain meds and send home.

2) when further tests were ordered, they were scheduled weeks later; bever when the pain was occurring, and were not able to detect a problem.

the intersucception would correct itself after a time, but would be prone to coming back randomly. it is caused by formation of polyps in the intestine, and the intestine essentially tries to pull itself through itself. painfull!!! eventually i had to have that portion of my large intestine removed and been great ever since. i don't know if it's treated differently if discovered earlier.

of course, pain, even extreme pain, is a symtpom of a ton of different things, but that is my experience.

oh, and my pain was usually concentrated in the front upper right quadrant. it "drifted over to the left, and occasionally hurt on the right side, which also frequently misled physicians to my appendix.

i would just be sure to talk a cf doc, or besure that the doc you do see scedules tests immediately rather than later. and, if it persists, seek a doc asap.

oh, i forgot to add that my pain wasn't constant, it would come and go; lasting about 30 secs to a minute, then relieving for 5-10 mitnues. the ons were so bad, though, that they felt forver, and the offs were spent recovering form the previous on. sometimes i would see stars, and if i was standing, i would fall over. it was really bad...

If it's a stomach ache that is very rare, it could be nothing more than gas being blocked in that region. My remedy for that was usually putting a heating pad around that area. It seemed to soothe the pain, while causing the gas to move onward.
Another possibility, is a galstone passing. That particular pain feels like a knife being thrusted in your back, though. It may linger for a while before it moves on, but sometimes there's another one following right behind it.
The kind of stomach aches that makes me cowel is when the gas gets caught up in the large intestine just below the rib cage. That is also remedied by a heating pad or just by laying your stomach on a pillow.
Hope it's nothing serious in your case, though.

It could be an intussuseption or a blockage, Ry had to have sugery for both. I'd get to a hospital, but I hope it's not that for you.

I second going to the hospital. Severe acute abdominal pain needs to be evaluated. It could be a number of things...

Please let us know how it turns out...
