Sharp, random chest pain

Does anyone else get really sharp chest pain at completely random times? It's not frequent at all (maybe a few times a year)...and will only last for maybe 30 seconds. However, those 30 seconds or so are extremely painful; ie I cannot stand up straight, can't take a deep breath, etc. One time it happened getting in the car w/ my friend and I screamed and fell down into the car it was so bad.

Anyway, it's so rare and never seems to happen near an appt (thus is never on my mind when I go to the dr), and have never asked my Dr about it.

I'm assuming it's nothing to worry about it, but we all know what happens when you assume <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> Hoping someone has some advice, or knows if it would be worth calling my doctor over. For what it's worth, my lung function pretty high (FEV1 - 103%)

Yeah I have gotten those. It is VERY random and does not happen often but lasts for no more than 10 seconds. It is SUPER sharp and I can not take a breathe in. It is so bizarre and comes out of nowhere. I wonder if it is the mucus moving and that just can cause a pain. I would say if it does not happen often and has no adverse lasting complications to not worry about it. But again just my opinon!

That is what Andrew describes when he has a plug. Have you had plugs before? Is that what it feels like?

I get them too. Actually, it's kind of nice to know it's not just me!

I talked to my pulmonary doctor about it once but unfortunately can't remember exactly what he said. He gave me several possible explanations and told me not to worry about it as long as it goes away quickly.

Those pains definitely make for a few bad moments! It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't hit out of nowhere--you don't have a chance to brace yourself for the pain.

That happens to me on a rare occasion too, though it's never been as painful as you've described -- but it does hurt if I take too deep a breath. It's usually followed in the next 48 by coughing up a tiny amount of blood. Never a lot, just a dot in my sputum. I got it checked out and nothing looked unusual. I think between harsh meds and airway clearance, we can put our lungs through a lot, even aside from any latent infections. Anyway, if there's no significant problems for you, I wouldn't worry too much about it -- just maybe bring it up at your next regular appointment.
