Shell-shocked here...new to Hypertonic Saline

Hey all.....I am sorry to say that I have not been here in a while because our Ryan has been pretty healthy and I was basically suspending reality for a while. Anyhow, an MRI revealed that CF is doing it's evil thing in Ryan's lungs, so he was just put on Hypertonic Saline twice a day.

I am totally shell-shocked because this appears to be an extra 30-40 minute breathing treatment, TWICE every day...and of course, this is on TOP of his 2X per day vest treatment and Pulmozyme.

I feel just awful for the little guy....how much more can a 7 year old handle? As adults, we know that it's only keeping him healthy, but it is going to make him ANGRY, and I understand why!

Question: does anyone know if there is a way to shorten Hypertonic Saline treatments? Our Doc is very un-empathetic and matter-of-fact, so he will just give us the "it is what it is" talk, but damn it....I feel awful for my guy!

Any thoughts for a buuuuuuumed out parent of a beautiful little boy?

Thanks,
Dan Flaharty

What kind of compressor do you have? It absolutely can impact the amount of time it takes. We have a 50psi hospital grade compressor (invicare mobilaire) and it takes only about 6 minutes for pulmozyme. We don't have HTS so I don't know the time on that.

That's way too long and not necessary. Let's figure out what's taking so long. Are you doing 4mls of 7% hypertonic made by Pari? In addition to the kind of compressor, what kind of nebulizer cup are you using -- a Pari LC plus or Pari Sprint which is a bit faster? Are the nebs old or clogged?

Can you give more information?

Is he also doing albuterol? To save time our doctor allows Sarah add the albuterol drops to the hypertonic saline instead of doing them separately. So she does the 4ml of hypertonic saline with .5ml of albuterol, totaling 4.5 ml. (Not all of his patients are allowed to do this because their lungs are too sensitive the the HTS.)

Otherwise she would be doing 3ml of Albuterol then 4ml of HTS, totaling 7ml...so combining them does save time.

The other time savings is combining the neb with the vest. Sarah often does her Albuterol/Saline with her vest, or starts the vest 10-15 minutes into her neb treatment instead of waiting for it to be completely done. It all depends on how much time we have.
