Should I be tested?

I recently went to a pulmanary specialists to have a pulmantary function test because I have had asthma issues for a while. My dads "lung doctor" (as he calls him) told my parents that I should be tested for CF because it is possible that I have it and it is just a mild case?
Now I am aware that I most likely do not have CF. I have a mild case of asthma and no digestional problems (I am about 30lbs overweight). Could it be possible that I have CF? I have heard of minor cases but mostly those involve digestion issues which I do not have. Apparently, this same dr. said that they just had someone diagnosed at 5o!!! Has anyone else heard of this or had this experience with not many symptoms?

i've heard of it. it's possible. is it likely? no.

many asthmatics have poor lung function, so that alone doesn't mean that you have CF. and many CF gene carriers have occasional CF like symptoms.

once the gene was discovered in 1989 (I was 8...), everyone in my family was tested to see if they were carriers (my mom has 9 brothers & sisters).

my parents, out of curiosity, wanted to know which genes they gave me. mom gave me the delta F508 and dad gave me the delta i507. we're just nerds like that and we were really curious. no practical purpose of knowing. well, i take that back. it helped to know which gene my parents gave to me cuz then we knew which gene to look for in my grandparents and my parents' siblings. so there was a practical purpose.

we even went to my grandparents cuz we were curious about carrier symptoms. low and behold, my maternal grandma who has digestion issues with popcorn and fatty foods and has gallstones is the carrier. maternal grandpa is not. paternal grandma who has severe astham throughout her family is a carrier and maternal grandfather is not a carrier.

but really, if i were in your shoes, i'd be curious which gene i gave to my son. you probably dont' have CF but if you're curious, your genetic test will tell you that too.

additionally, if you have siblings that are of child-bearing age they should know if they are carriers as well. same with your husband's siblings.

lots to think about but i say go for the test.

If insurance will cover it, it couldn't hurt. If nothing else you'll know what mutation you have. If you know which mutations Weston has you could also determine how accurate a test you need, you may only need to do the 32 panel test.

Yes Amy I think there is something to the carriers having some CF symptoms. Of course there will be some people that say they r a carrier and have none, but I think there really is a pattern of symptoms of carriers. I had once looked into the few research cases there were in this area, I can't remember, but I think they concluded it was inconclusive to say CF carriers had a mild form of CF of something like that. I think if they really looked hard at the CF gene they may find a lot of asthma people have one of the CF gene. Being a male and only a carrier has been shown to be a cause of sterility (lack of vas defernces). My 4 yr old who is a carrier had a lot of breathing problems when he was younger w/ wheezing and his ped once stated, "Isn't this back a$sward, you have one child with CF and no breathing problems, then another child without CF and breathing problems"
