Side Effects from Intravenous Tobra

I know that the tobra can affect your kidneys and your hearing, but I was curious can it cause you to have an "instability"? It is hard to describe, I don't feel dizzy but I just don't feel right. I don't even really feel out of balance but I get this feeling, more so when I am driving in a car, that my brain...not my head is floating! I know this sounds really weird and it is hard for me to describe, but I don't feel totally safe driving a car myself.

This started about a month or so ago. At the time I was taking meropenem and tobra. But the thing is I had been on them from Oct 26 thru Nov 16th- was off for 4 weeks- back on them for 2 weeks- off again for 1 week and on again for 2 weeks. Everytime I stopped them I would get sick again and have to go right back on them. I have never had to take them that much in such a short period of time. I don't know if this could be from the tobra or if it is something totally unrelated. I just thought I would see if anyone here had a similar experience from it.

I never really could explain it to my doctors either- it wasn't quite dizziness, not quite vertigo...The first time I had it, it took almost a year to totally go away (and thankfully it went away right before the balance test I was scheduled for- I've heard that that is awful.

It started again the last time I was in the hospital, when I was on Vanco, and I insisted that they stop it, as I didn't want to go through all those weird fevers and dizziness/vertigo/whatever that was again. I would definitely call your doctor about it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

Well, the reason that tobra causes hearing loss is called ototoxicity- it affects the ears, and therefore, can also affect your equilibrium. There are cases of people who become permanently dizzy. If it goes away after you get off, I wouldn't worry about it, but if you find it lasting after, I'd worry more. Mention it to your doctor anyway.
