Side effects from Tobramycin

I am wondering if anyone has had similar side effects from the tobramycin iv. The other night I woke up about 2 a.m. because I thought I heard something in my sons room. I walked down the hall, checked on him and walked back to my room. When I got to back to my door, I started feeling dizzy, then I got very off balance and by the time I got to my bed I thought I was going to faint. I laid down and then this ringing started in my ears and I had kind of a fullness or something in my head. I could tell I couldn't heard as well as normal. Then the ringing turned into a buzzing like a flourescent light. It lasted about 10 minutes then went away.

The next day, I called the pharmacist and my dr. and they both thought it was just a fluke. The pharmacist said that if it was from the tobramycin it wouldn't have went away. He said it would have just gotten worse.

Also, Has anyone noticed that they gain weight when they are on iv antibiotics. Everytime I go on IV antibiotics, I gain 3-4 lbs.

Thanks.

I have been on Tobramycin iv once, it started to effect my kidneys so I cant take it anymore. But I never had effects from it but have read that they will cause it. If it keeps coming back I would stop taking it, if it does come back its possible it could be worse then the first time, I would diffanately keep my eye on it. I take toby the one you inhale for a treatment 28 on and 28 off and sometimes I get ringing in my ears sometimes and dizzyness sometimes too but its not severe. It only lasts from a few seconds to maybe a min.

I thought it was just me! I'm not on the IV but i'm taking the inhaled tobi and it's happened twice and both times I was on tobi. It was really scary, I got really weak and had to sit down. It felt like the room was closing in on me and my ears were ringing also. Then after like 5 minutes of it it started to sound like a speaker up full blast but with no sound. It lasted for about 10 minutes as well but it felt like a lifetime. I had no idea what could have been causing it.

Be careful with Tobra IVs if you're hearing ringing and stuff. Be sure to tell your doctor. Tobra IVs can cause hearing loss. And buzzing/ringing etc, can be a sign that this is beginning.

I have hearing loss in one ear from Tobra. I'm in the process of evaluating which type of hearing aid would be the best for me. Be sure to let your doctor know about the symptoms you're having, as they may not be reversible. I have regained some of my hearing in one ear, but not the other.

Kylie

I am not still dizzy. It went away after I laid down.

Emily,

I did call the dr's office and they just said to let them know if it continued.

I am still pretty convinced though that it had to do with the tobra. I am a little nervous with continuing it.

The nurse came out on Friday to do a blood level on the tobra but I haven't heard anything so I assume it was ok. Does anyone know if it is going to effect your hearing, can they tell just from the blood work? I thought the blood work was to determine whether it was effecting your kidneys. I am actually wondering about that too because like I said in my first post, I always gain weight when on the iv, which has always been tobra. I have gained 3 lbs. in 3 days! So I am wondering if I am retaining water.

Well, I still have 12 days of antibiotics to go. I really don't feel good about the tobra. I don't know what I should do.

Thanks everyone!
