Sinus Infections

I have "not so bad" sinuses (for a cfer), with what was chronic, but now are intermittent, sinus infections.

Taking Singulair along with my antihistamine helped a surprising amount, since mine were mostly allergy started.

Also, the sinus rinses do help alot for several people I've talked to.

I also have a friend whose 8 year old (no cf) takes a nasal spray (something like Nasonex) for adnoids, and it helps a good bit.

Since my sinuses were "just" infected, and not impacted/totally blocked, my ENT put me on a Nasal Nebulizer with Cephtaz- and wow! What a difference!

The infection that oral antibiotics could barely touch (if at all) went away, and I could feel air moving all the way up in my nose again (I had forgotten how that felt! The sinus rinses I started afterwards did the same thing, btw ).

And one last thing - has she been allergy tested? I have felt much better since I found out that I was allergic to feathers, and was sleeping under a goosedown blanket (but not now !).

It just seems like there are several things left to try before something as invasive as surgery...Good luck

Reply to AnD, We have been on Singulair and Nasanex for the past eitht years. and yest we have had allergy testing done a few years ago and did the shots for three years. I did not ask the ENT about the sines rinses but if this keeps up after the tonsil and adnoid surgery I am for sure going to ask. Thanks for all the suggestions.

hey everyone

my ENT who works with a lot of Cfers suggested that doing p'zyme through the mouth piece but exhaling only through the nose really slowly (might be hard for little ones). i have found doing this all the time helped but it took a while to notice a difference.

i also do rinses 1 x day (in the shower is best) and carry around a saline spray in my hand-bag. As far as comforting sinus headaches i have a steam facial gadget thing (hot water in a bowl with a towel and a drop of eucalyptus oil does the same trick) and the other thing that helps is doing HS in a face mask if you don't already do that. oh and just one other thing i do when i feel i am getting a infection is get a massage. focussing on neck and head pressure points releives a lot of pain and helps me get muck out. Anyway just a few pointers for sinus care. Although they might not avoid surgery this time it might avoid them in the future, i have had quite a few surgeries but have found that good management, even when they dont feel bad, has helped avoid infections even if i get a cold.

Everyone hit on what I was going to add to the discussion. My experience was this: Years ago when I kept getting lung infections one after another, my new doctor sent me for a CT scan and I had 100% blockage on one side. Completely didn't feel it. Except for a post nasal drip my whole life. The doctor gave me a few months to attempt to open the blockage before scheduling surgery.

She said in her practice, 95% of patients avoid sinus surgery by Singulair and Nasal Rinses 2 to 3 times a day. When the sinus didn't open, I had to schedule surgery which I desperately didn't want. Amazingly, the night before the surgery, it was called off because the sinus opened and started draining down the back of my throat. It took 5 months.

I've never had a sinus issue again. I take Nasalcrom nasal spray, Astilin nasal spray, and Nasononex. Claritin every day. And as other suggested, strict allergy control in my environment (no fragrances, no carpets, gentle cleaning agents, encased pillows/bedding, hepa vacuum, air filter, etc.)

With cleaner air, avoidance of allergens and chemicals in the house and in your food, the inflammation in the sinuses AND lungs reduce. Instead of the mucus staying trapped in the sinuses causing infection and slowly dripping into the lungs resulting in infection there also. The dripping is worse at night because we don't swallow as much, so I am sure the throat clearing is the mucus sitting in the back of throat.

Don't be surprised that doctors don't recommend certain things. They are not always up on everything, especially the off use of drugs like using Singulair and Nasal rinses. My previous doctor said it wouldn't work and the big shot surgeon said that it wouldn't work, telling me I needed extensive surgery. But if you google it -- it is in the literature. The theory is: if Singulair can shrink tissue in the lungs, it can shrink tissue in the nose too. But it seems that the Nasal Rinse is needed also. Worked great for me. Stll do it 2x per day.
