Sinus Pain and Pressure...What do you take for relief?

My sinuses HURT sooooooo bad. I am taking motrin more than I probably should be, but it really does help. I am hoping it is allergy related and will get better, but I don't have a clue what to do in the meantime. I am tempted to call the ENT, but I fear that he will suggest surgery again, which I don't really want to do. I am thinking I should try and hold off until after Christmas so that I will be in tip top shape for my wedding (which is in April). If I did surgery now, the pain and pressure would probably be back by wedding time.

Do you take a decongestant? I can't remember if decongestants are good for CFer's or not. I take zyrtec, and sinus rinses every day, but its not helping. Do you take aleve? I did not have any motrin with me a few days ago and took an aleve from my cousin and that seemed to take effect much faster even than the motrin. Which would be better for a CFer? Is there even any difference? I have been taking up to 4-5 motrins a day, but with the aleve I only needed one. I worry about taking too much motrin sometimes without getting the prescription strength (which is another option...I have also been on the motrin therapy before...800 mgs twice a day).

What are your suggestions? What do you do for yourself? Please let me know!

I've been in the same boat quite a bit. I prefer the surgery route, however if you want to prevent that talk to your ENT about getting a CT done to see if you are totally obstructed and then ask about antibiotic flushes after they get a culture. I recently had to have 2 surgeries and almost a month on Vancomycin, which killed the MRSA, but allowed the pseudomonas to explode. Now I'm doing Gentamycin flushes and oral Septra.

The jury is still out on how effective antibiotic flushes are, but most docs err on the side that they are at least somewhat effective.

I've been having some sinus trouble myself lately. I had gone to the ENT and it looks like surgery is in my near future. But I know what you're talking about with trying to avoid surgery for as long as possible. I'm taking the LSATs in two weeks and so I've been avoiding going forth with any surgeries, etc.

What I've been taking to hold me over until I can actually schedule a surgery date is Tylenol Cold and Sinus (daytime formula). I find that it doesn't make me jittery and really does lasts throughout the day. It's worth a shot if you were looking for something else besides Motrin.

I take Tylenol Allergy/Sinus Severe and that usually clears up sinus congestion/pain that I have. Nothing else really works for me as far as sinus headaches go.

I have good luck with Sudafed or Pseudoephedrine. You can get it over the counter but most pharmacies keep it behind the counter. It is really the only thing, along with advil, that helps me make it through a day if I am fighting an infection.

I also use Tylenol Allergy/Sinus Severe. I think it works better than most of the other stuff, and it doesn't make you drowsy.

ALEEVE! Aidan is 6 and has had 6 sinus surgeries already. When he has packed sinuses/pressure, we were giving him Motrin/Tylenol all the time. Then our CF doctor told us we could use ALeeve twice a day for longer pain management. It worked SO much better. He is scheduled for surgery again in December...sinuses suck. He does rinses everyday as well. In 8 months, he needed 3 seperate surgeries and months of IVs to clear his sinuses.
