sinus problems

OK, my dad doesn't have CF. (not sure of carrier status...) But, since so many people here have had their share of sinus problems, I thought I may ask for some help.

My dad is going to be 60 years old in a few months. Lately, his sinuses have been causing him so many problems and he is getting no relief. He has had problems for many years, but getting out of control. He does have polyps, which need to be removed.

Two weeks ago he was feeling a head cold coming on, and his right eye turned red and started drooping. He went to his doctor who sent him directly to an eye specialist and for blood work and a CT scan. They said that he has a terrible infection in his sinuses and gave him several meds, none have helped.

His reg. doctor suggested he may need surgery to remove the infection...so he was sent to another doctor, who my dad thought was a doctor who specialized in sinus issues, but when he got there it was another eye doctor?! Still no answers.

The man can't hardly sleep at night (he has sleep apena and sleeps with a machine). He tries sleeping sitting up, which isn't helping.

Has any of you had major sinus problems like this and what was done to correct it? My dad doesn't complain about much...he's pretty tough. But this is just kicking his bottom! Any ideas?

My BIL and FIL both have major sinus issues and have had surgeries. Has he been seen by an ENT yet? Both of them now do regular sinus rinses (neil med) -- my FIL JUST started doing this within the past 6 months, thanks to DS showing him how & my BIL not only does sinus rinses, but does nebulized sinus antibiotics.

My BIL has had issues with infection, fungus, etc. in his sinuses and sometimes the only way to get to the infection to get rid of it is to have surgery...

I am primarily a sinus sufferer. When I was a lot sicker, I used a xylitol-saline sinus rinse for a long time to help with my sinus issues. I also put carmex directly in my nose a couple times a day. I now do sinus rinses with a mixture of diet tonic water and peroxide -- it hurts like hell and I don't recommend it for someone who is severely infected. It's too harsh. I recommend the xylitol-saline rinses because they are gentler but still effective.

However, when someone has such a severe infection, I think they need to address a lot of other stuff as well because it suggests the system overall is weakened. Infections aren't really local. They impact the entire body. When I have a bad infection, I take adrenal and thyroid support to help support my immune system. I take more vitamins. I take herbal anti-biotics like olive leaf extract and oil of oregano. I take stuff to support my liver and stuff to support my circulatory system. All that stuff interrelates.

Good luck to your dad.

I don't have cf but get bad sinus infections. My doctor has me do NeilMed a sinus rinse. I swear by this. It breaks up all the junk. Plus around antibx kicks it in the butt. You can buy it over the counter in any drug store.
