Sinus Surgery, what can I expect?

I've had this surgery twice. The first time was a "typical" surgery and I noticed a big improvement after it that last about 6 mos. Then my symptoms got really bad again.

A few years later I had surgery again at a different hospital, different doctor. It was also a different procedure, one where I wore a helmet. I forget what it was called. The helmet had a CT scan in it and had probes that went up my nostrils and did the cleaning out. I had major pain and problems before both of these surgeries, but after this 2nd one I never noticed an improvement. In fact, 2 mos. later they did another CT scan and I was completely blocked and "packed in" again. They offered to repeat and I told them "No, you had your chance!!"

Recovery was fine after both. There are pros and cons for "packing" afterward. The one removed packing right away and the other left it in for a few hours if I remember right.

I hope that everyone sharing their experiences has relieved your mind somewhat and that all goes well with your surgery!

Both of my boys have each had this surgery twice. It was easy enough with no complications. The last two times they were on IVs for several days before the surgery.

The only problem we had was that Jesse (I think he was 8 then) had some bleeding the next day. It scared him so much that he didn't move for a few days. As a result he ended up getting pneumonia<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

We always ask for one of those plastic breathing ball things (suck to move the air and the balls). It keeps their lungs active afterwards.

Good luck

I had sinus surgery for the first time 10/05. Like you, a ct scan showed quite a bit of blockage. I was having quite a bit of trouble...couldn't breathe well through my nose and each sinus infection led to a lung infection (and hemoptysis). After the surgery I was amazed at how well I could breathe through my nose! JOY!

I will add that my ENT doc was having some personal problems at the time and left my packing in an extra day. OMG...was I so ready for him to pull it out! Other than that, the surgery was uneventful. I did have a black eye from the surgery, and the day of, I did have nausea from the amount of blood in my stomach after the surgery. I wasn't quite prepared for that, but my cf doc told me to eat crackers to help with the nausea.

I think you will notice a remarkable improvement in your breathing. I've had some continuing problems since my surgery, but they seem to stem from allergies. I still continue with a twice daily nielmed rinse followed with sinus flush with antibiotics.
