Small Bowel Obstruction

Hi All,
On Friday (Aug. 24) at 9pm I started to feel really bloated and had a few cramps. I figured it was the mac n' cheese I ate for dinner. I took a gas -x but it didn't help. The cramps got worse... I took an Advil and got the hot water bottle. Still nothing. I got a hot bath. Still nothing. So I went to bed to sleep it off. At 3:30 am I woke up and I was still in pain. I went with my instinct and went to the ER. After x-rays and ct scans the doc's 'thought' I had a bowel obstruction. I needed emergency surgery. Since they were not sure if it was a bowel obstruction I had to have exploratory surgery... and a small bowel obstruction was the case.
I just wanted to inform everyone that I have NEVER had trouble with my bowels before... I NEVER get constipated! Actually, I had 'a bowel movement' while I was having all the cramping. I never imagined I need surgery. It just goes to show that going with your instinct is the best thing to do. If I had of not went it could have 'exploded'... that's a lot of dangerous toxins! I spent 13 days in the hospital. I spent one night in ICU, I had an NG tube, catheter, epidural and was fed with TPN for 6 days. I've been home now for a week and I'm starting to feel much better! I hope someone can learn from my experience.

Jennifer, thanks so much for sharing this with us. I've never had bowel problems either (so far), but if I feel something is wrong, I am definitely going to trust my instincts.

So many people blow off pain and tell themselves it's nothing. I'd rather go to the ER and find out I'm just having bad gas than to stick it out at home and have my bowels explode! I'm glad you're home now and doing better. Onward and Upward!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Wow, I'm just so surprised they went ahead and did surgery. Not that that's a bad thing, but usually don't the doctors make you sit in pain for a few days while they try to see if enemas or go-lytely work? Glad you're feeling better and on the road to recovery.
