Snack ideas

I have begun making chocolate cake and sugar cookies from scratch, using organic butter, organic sugars, and other wholesome ingredients. When we first began making them, they disappeared rapidly. They don't screw up my blood sugar the way most sugary snacks do.

Part of the problem is like Liza said; the rest of the family members do not need the extra calories; but we love to snack , too. I can resist a little easier than the others. It's not just the extra fat; it is the salt too. I picked up some beef jerky(maggie will eat half a bag), my hubby will eat the other half! It's not high in fat but the salt is not good for him, we're not as young as we used to be! Baking is a good idea; when I have time I've added ground flax meal to bread and cookies; noone ever notices however Maggie is not big into cakes and cookies...only the frosting! I could give her a tub of frosting and she'ld eat it til she gets a tummy ache. I've also added ground flax to store bought pancake mix; that's good for all of us. Picked up a bunch of valentine candy on sale; I use it to bribe Maggie to take her nasty antibiotic she's on right now

Yogurt is a good one...our local store brand is really good and it's 250 calories for one little cup.

Our son eats what we call "ice cream in a glass" every night before he goes to bed. It's chocolate ice cream with whole milk and crushed ruffles in it. It sounds like a funny combo but it's kind of like adding nuts. The chips aren't healthy but the milk and ice cream are a good source of Vitamin D...plus one glass is 1000 calories!

It's taken me forever to find healthy snacks that don't taste too healthy. LOL. And now I have to hide my snacks because once my boyfriend gets a taste, he'd rather eat the healthy snacks than his junk food.

A lot of products I buy at Trader Joe's but unfortunately this great store is regional. But many of the products can be found on Amazon or Ebay.

I look for snacks without sugar (it depresses the immune system), preferring either honey or fruit juice sweetened.

1. Odwalla Bars: Berries GoMega flavor as well as others. Sold as a 6 bar box, very inexpensively at Target but in their pharmacy dept with the other protein type bars.

2. Macadamia nuts: high in good fat and very tasty

3. I toast brown rice cakes and top with almond butter

4. Weil Chia Razz Pure fruit and nut bar (has Omegea 3's) on Amazon.com 16 pack for $24.12. Trader Joe's has a fruit & nut bar that is natural (no added sugar) and very inexpensive.

5. Snapea crisps (made by Calbee) sold everywhere. I was in Trader Joe's and a mom was buying 10 bags for her kids.

6. Organic apple sauce

7. I buy plain yogurt and add creamed honey, then fruit and nuts.

8. I have a "magic bullet" type blender and make quick protein shakes with soy powder (whey is probably better) soymilk (or hemp milk, or almond mild), fruit, yogurt, you can add almond butter.

9. Better N' Peanut Butter. I eat by the spoonfuls. small amount of evaporated cane sugar(check for peanut allegies)

10. Pirate's Booty

If you want a list of my favorite healthy Trader Joe's snacks -- just ask.
