It's due to the Cuban Adjustment Act, i.e., flipping the bird in the face of communism. (introduced in 1966) It's nowhere near perfect, but that isn't really the crux of the matter.

I'm still trying to figure out this whole "rewards" thing... Just throw in some McMansions in there and we'll have the epitome of immigrant life. No, really, my immigrant husband just asked where our McMansion is. He's also demanding to know about this "free" healthcare: <i>"Because for some reason so far, I've been charged for it! I don't know why!"</i> Oh wait, legal immigrants don't get rewards, nor do illegals.

A hospital will treat you regardless of status or money. Whether or not you skip out on the bill is an entirely different issue. An illegal immigrant can easily disappear, as he or she has no social security number (for example). While it's not something I agree with, it is not lala, skip off into the sunset after receiving totally free care because the government is so nice. Sorry... I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm frustrated by people go by hearsay.

You (cosmicdust) are just as poisoned as I am. Your views are biased, just as mine are. We could go on and on and throw up our differences, with all professional references in tact. It won't matter. Even though I could technically be seen as the person who brought immigration into this thread (of me getting screwed)...What is the point of continuing? You are poisoned, and so am I. More than likely, we are poisoned in different directions. You or me are pro, and maybe you or me are con. Does it matter? Our feelings/opinions won't change. The only thing ultimately different between us, besides external stimulus, is that I am 36, and you are 22. And you seem to have CFRD and I do not. Does that make either one "right", or one "wrong?"...no. We will just totally disagree on many things. That's how life works.

This is just a fact, I don't really see how it's a "biased view".

When you set foot into a hospital, they are medically obligated to treat you. What happens when you walk out the door is up to you, as far as paying goes.

As far as the rest of the thread goes, I get the impression that a lot of you would probably view *me* as a 'leech' which makes me less than comfortable. I get SSI and don't really have many alternatives as far as income and healthcare go. As was said earlier, if you make over a certain amount, you lose SSI, which for me would mean no healthcare, which would not be pretty.
