The idea is that no one can not afford healthcare. It is usually (or at least in Canada) subsidized by an extra or increase in sales tax. It doesnt matter for personal income....everyone would have healthcare. My understanding tho is that some things just arent available in areas with socialized medicine such as the vest.

I expanded abit since you asked for us to elaborate.

In addition, does the government dictate which doctors you can see, what procedures you can have done, etc?

yes and no. if you bug the hospital enough or if you go private you can choose your own doc. ive never had a problem requesting a particular doctor. i guess part of this is because they know cf patients will blow their top if they dont get what they want lol. you can have any procedure done apart from unecessary cosmetic surgery, but there is a waiting list. if your surgery isnt urgent you can wait a very long time. once again i havent yet had any problems when it comes to surgery. my port surgeries were scheduled pretty quick and i had emergency surgery yonks ago that was scheduled within hours. if you want to be seen faster or if you want cosmetic surgery you need to go private. top private insurance costs are about the same as the US or slightly cheaper.

i'm sorry if this sounds patronising but i'm going to do an idiots guide to the nhs ( national health service) no one here calls it socialised medicine. also i'm doing it in shorthand, i hate typing.!!!!!!!!!!

you or one of your family is ill.
first stop your gp. ( general practitioner) everyone has their own ( there maybe a few drs. in their practise) you will the same dr. all your life if they don't retire or if you don't move about to different parts of the country.

a gp can treat minor ailments ,even do small ops. remove warts cysts etc. and they diagnose serious illnesses.

if they diagnose a serious illness you will be sent to see a specialist who specialises in that particular disease.it is well known that you can be sent straight from your dr to the nearest hospital and operated on straight away if it's something serious. ( lump in your breast as an example) 2or 3 months to see a specialist sn't unusual if it is not life threatening.

a consultant is a doctor who has reached the pinnacle of his career, he has trained in his/her specialised choice in medicine. surgery, orthopedics, obgyn. etc.

the nhs is not perfect but i will continue to defend it because i am proud of the idea behind it . it has nothing to do with socialist governments.

the nhs was founded by a fellow welshman no less!!!!!

the nhs is funded by taxes. the cf teams are part funded by the cf trust.

if i haven't made myself clear i will be happy to answer ??????. to the other brits anything you can think of to add please do this is my longest post EVER . i want an award for services to the nhs.!!!!!
