I'm 11 1/2 weeks pregnant and couldn't be happier. My ob has referred me to see a maternal fetal specialist and I go next week and I was just wondering if anyone has had to go see one. I just want to know what I can expect. I'm a little scared to go to my cf doctor. They told me a while back that I should not have a baby because of my pft levels. Where I live the weather is kinda crazy and it has been really cold and then warm, so it plays with my lungs as well. My pft levels last time were around 54%. So I'm also wondering if anyone else has pft levels that are close to that. I'm also really anxious to find out the sex of the baby. I really want a girl and of course my husband wants a boy. Hope everyone else is doing well!

Candice,
Congratulations on being pregnant. FWIW, the studies show that having an FEV over 50% means that getting pregnant and carrying a baby to term shouldn't have any long term effect on your health. So you're within the "window". Of course everyone is different but just thought I'd throw it out there.

I saw a perinatologist when I was pregnant with Logan (along with my regular OB) and will probably do the same this time around. I don't feel she was 100% necessary but she was a great resource to help us determine what IV meds I could be on when I got sick. I saw her every 6 weeks and at each visit they did an ultrasound to measure his growth. Just FYI I was able to find out he was a boy at 14 weeks. There was no question and they didn't hesitate when I asked if they would be able to tell that early. This time around I don't think I want to find out. I'm hopeful for a girl but part of me wants another little boy.

Just like I have said on previous threads - don't let any doctor, even the maternal-fetal specialist, tell you that just because you have CF that you need a c-section or an induction. There may be other reasons why you may require interventions but CF shouldn't be one. Some doctors are overly cautious.

i didn't see the peri until i was around 28 weeks. my cf doctor really wanted me to see one, but my regular ob said there really wasn't any reason to see one. i ended up with gestational diabetes so the peri kept up with my sugar levels and let me know how to treat them.
i would have done fine without seeing the peri, but it did ease my cf doctor.

I only saw regular OBs for both of my pregnancies. I don't think, unless I had extenuating circumstances, that I would go to a peri, and my reasoning is this: from everything i have read about Cfers having babies, it is still new enough and docs are unsure enough that they tend to want to go overboard on the medical interventions/precautions - when, if you peruse through the site and read most of our birth stories, we all had relatively easy pregnancies and labors that Cf really played hardly any part in.
