Sputum cultures

My daughter gets a culture every visit. They basically stick a long q-tip toward the back of her throat till she gags and brings stuff up. Usually it's clear, although last time it was a little more yellowish. Color doesn't necessarily mean it has bugs.. The doc said dk yellow or green isn't good... but other than that, not much to worry about.

My boyfriend usually doesn´t culture any bug when he has white sputum (normal flora),(most of the year), and he cultures s.aureus (sensitive to all antibiotics), when he has yellowish sputum during a flare up, about twice a year.
As I told you in a post before, he was diagnosis too at an old age (35). He had normal x-ray and found mild bronchiectasies in the ct scan.
If you are trying to find out if you have cf, I would do a culture too during a flare up, to see if you culture any of the "typical" cf bugs. Cultures when you don´t have a flare up could be normal.
Can I ask you if they have done a ct scan yet?

Rita. Boyfriend 36 with cf diagnosed at 35

I think I have only been able to cough something up like twice in my life (and I go 4 times a year). I always get swabbed. It's not a big deal and really fast - they just stick this long q-tip into your throat. It always makes me gag, but, like I said, no biggie - and this is coming from someone with a vomiting phobia.

With DS they still do a throat culture 'cuz he hasn't mastered how to hack up something without swallowing it. He usually doesn't have anything to cough up, but the RT hooks up the vest and a nebulizer with hypertoninc saline in it to get him all rumbly. But last time he didn't have anything to bring up.
