Staph - how is yours treated?

Okay guys,

I have been wondering if there is any point in asking my doc about some type of maintenance treatment for the Staph I grow. Kind of like TOBI for Psuedo. I know in the past when I was younger my docs had me on Bactrim every other month and TOBI every other month.

I have been thinking that it would be helpful to me if I were on something to control the Staph - not necessarily eradicate it but to keep it at a manageable level.

I am interested to see if any of you that culture Staph or MRSA are receiving any type of ongoing treatment - NOT IVs for the Staph.

I don't treat my Staph because it keeps my PA in check. (I always culture both)

So no treatment for staph like I take treatment for PA.

I'm sure Tobi keeps staph down as well? Why not stay on that full time, or switch it with colistamethate every other month?

I cultured staph for over 10 years until in Feb this year when I was put on a month of gentamycin nebs. I've had staph-free sputum samples since March.

*fingers crossed it stays away!*

My daughter takes oral bactrim once a day for MRSA. This is the only bug she's ever cultured so far and when it acts up it causes lot of inflammation. She's NOT on TOBI, I've often wondered if there was an inhaled anti she could use to treat her MRSA.

My daughters both culture MRSA, and sometimes just staph. We don't use anything on a regular basis for them. Their CF doctor said that Tobi only treats the PA, and will not touch the staph. My older one tends to have problems with the MRSA and staph a lot. She was on IV vancomycin back in May, along with two others, and after that did great from May until October. Not even so much of a cough. But it started back up, and after trying Bactim, he now has her on Zyvox-yuckk! She hates the way it tastes. But it is supposed to be almost as good as IV Vanc, so a good thing to try prior to IV treatment. My younger one cultures PA, but my older one never has, but when she is having some problems he treats her as if she has it because he can't promise that it's not down in the lower parts and not just showing up in cultures. So, she has in the past month and half been on Cipro two times, 28 days of Tobi, Bactrim and Zyvox. If not better on the 29th of this month, we will start IVs. I do wish there were something she could do in order to help ease these staph flare ups.

TOBI will treat Staph Aureus. TOBI will not treat MRSA, just to clarify <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
