Hi Kelly,

Hope you don't mind. I'm jumping in here. I know every protocol is differnt. I was on Follistim and Repronex. I know they ended up changing my dose (increasing it) as the cycle went on. I remember my cycle started on 12/28/03 Cycle day 1, and we retrieved on January 21, 2004. I don't remember how long lupron lasted and when the stims started. I think typically the stim phase can last about 8 days. Sometimes less, sometimes more.

We retreived 11 eggs. Even though I had 40 follies. 20 were large (mature looking) and 20 were small, empty follies. But in the end only 11 eggs. 5 fertilized. I was so disappointed. We transferred 4 embryos and 2 of them took.

I did PIO for 12 weeks. It was the worst part of IVF. I laid flat on my belly, bare butt and DH did the injection. I didn't warm it up, it was room temp. Some people warm it under their armpit because the theory is, the warmer it is, the less viscous the solution is and the easier it goes in. Some people I know massaged the area. I didn't. I sat on a heating pad and did my morning nebs. That's it! You get used to it. Some days are easier than others. Honestly sometimes I didn't even feel it. Other days I had to bite my lip. I felt extremely sore, especially walking up stairs, but it's not unbearable. I also had the suppositories Julie was talking about. I used those once/day, in addition to the PIO once/day.

Hope this helps!

Tara,
What made you decide to put four in? Did your RE have a hard time with that decision? Mine will only allow for max of 2 with me! I pray they both stick but it is in God's hands. PIO scares me but DH did a practice injection using distilled water at the hospital. It was ok not too bad. It is just so bigg! They are starting me no Follistom 225 when typically a woman is put on 300. They don't want me to over hyperstimulate with the cf and all! Well it's off to clinic visit for cf. I pray my fev1 is high!

congratulations ladies! I too did IVF. If you woudl like to read my blog about it you can scroll to the very bottom. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://jnhfamilyblog.blogspot.com/
">http://jnhfamilyblog.blogspot.com/
</a>
I woudl warm pio once in syringe just a bit, ice bum, have DH inject, apply pressure 1 minute then massage for 3 and make sure you walk around afterwards to 'work it in' the muscle. Even with that protocal the bum gets a bit sore towards end of the 10 weeks on it! I HATED pio but well worth it.

I also thoght my cycle was a bust, almost aborted it due to hemoptysis and everything so just goes to show you never know! I also hyperstimmed and it was awful so make sure docs are conservative (I was a slow starter then skyrocketed!). Plus I have 11 embies left now and worried what to do if we dont use them all.

feel free to PM me with ?s and I will try to check back here as well.

Hi Kelly,

Most RE's have an office limit. They will not transfer more than 2 or 3 embies. On the day of transfer we had a meeting in the RE's office to discuss the quality of my embies. they didn't look that great. We had one 7 cell, three 6 cell and one 5 cell. I guess at 3 days post retreival, this is slow growth. I think they also "grade" the embies. Regardless, we decided they were not in good condition, they would not be healthy enough to be frozen so this was it. All or nothing so to speak. It was my decision and I was the one that requested we transfer 4 embies. He didn't even blink an eye. CF or not, the chances of getting quads (or more) was slim based on the quality of the embies. It turns out two of them are healthy happy toddlers now. Even for the first 9 weeks, they kept telling me, "well, you're pregnant with twins, for now". The RE's office wasn't thrilled about how Abby looked for some reason. They were always concerned she wouldn't make it. But she did! My OB started seeing me around 11 weeks. He never had a concern. I also saw a peri. And he never had a concern for baby B (Abby).

I seemed to have a harder time with the PIO than anyone else is mentioning. It was unbearable for me. So I gave up and did the vag suppositories. My doc preferred the PIO but I couldn't even get upstairs to the bedroom.

It's good that they are starting you on a lower dose. Because most likely, your issues have nothing to do with egg quality. But rather, with the sperm/and or cervical mucus (forgive me, but for the life of me I can't remember if you have CF or if it's your DH). I too was started on a low dose, but I ended up getting overstimulated anyways.

Let me tell you, that was painful and extremely uncomfortable. You aren't in danger from it unless it's a very sever case, but it's impossible to sleep or sit comfortably. I had 2 trips to the ER and 1 trip into my RE to have the fluid drained from my stomach. The thing with OHSS is that if you DO get pregnant, the OHSS last longer and is more intense because of the hormone levels.

I'm not trying to scare you, I just wanted to share what I wish others had honestly shared with me.

If you guys are looking for other women to talk to ("cycle buddies"), I fell in love with www.inciid.org , then click on forums... nevermind, here's the link: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.inciid.org/forums/ivfwaiting/index.html
